4th of July

Don’t even get us started on how many people can’t spell ‘independence’ correctly.

NEW YORK — Independence Day may be synonymous with summer, but one survey found many Americans should go back to school! It turns out one in three people don’t know how to spell “independence” — and even fewer know why Americans celebrate on the Fourth of July!

Specifically, the 2022 poll of 1,030 Americans, commissioned by Lawsuit.org, found over a third spell independence incorrectly. Moreover, researchers add that internet searches for “how to spell independence” skyrocket by 85 percent during the July 4th holiday weekend.

The most common way people misspell this important word in the American lexicon is by using an “a” — spelling it “independance.”

Other common misspellings include independense, indpendence, indiependence, and independents — which is actually a real word, but there’s no such thing as Independents Day.

Are you an indepen-dunce?

Spelling isn’t the only thing giving many people trouble on the Fourth of July. Last year’s survey also discovered that plenty of respondents deserve an F in American history.

As most elementary school students could tell you, July 4th commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 — signaling the nation’s freedom from British rule. However, the poll found two in three young adults in Gen Z don’t know who America declared its independence from.

In fact, one in three Gen Zers think July 4th celebrates America’s independence from the Native Americans!

Overall, less than 58 percent of all respondents correctly answered that America gained its freedom from Great Britain. Nearly eight percent said “Europe.” Over eight percent said “South America” and more than 12 percent chose “none of the above!” Perhaps these respondents think the sci-fi blockbuster “Independence Day” is a documentary.

The embarrassing American trivia doesn’t end there. The poll also found plenty of people who need a refresher course on the American flag.

One in 10 respondents didn’t know how many stripes are on the American flag. While red, white, and blue may be easy to remember, the poll discovered that the average American thinks there are 14 stripes on the flag — instead of the correct answer of 13, which symbolize the original 13 colonies.

So, regardless of how you spell it, Happy independance… independense… (oh, the heck with it) Happy Fourth of July!

“As most elementary school students could tell you, July 4th commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776″

” However, the poll found two in three young adults in Gen Z don’t know who America declared its independence from.”

How can these two statements from the article not be conflicting?
Did Gen Z adults not go to elementary school?
Is recreational marijuana really that potent and prevalent now?
Should the author go back to elementary school?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

“How can these two statements from the article not be conflicting?”

Well you see.. The first piece of knowledge is the how.
The second one – the one that is missing – is the who.

Hahahahaha….. And you have just publicly professed that you don’t know the difference.

      Well done, American.

  2. Beth says:

Please review your numbers. They do not add up. 58% were correct not 33% according to your headline.

  3. Myra Mains says:

Just proves the failure of the education system.

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

No Myra. It just proves the failure of American Culture.

      You are clueless.

  4. Roger Diaz says:

“many Americans should go back to school”
What would be the point of that? It’s obvious that our public education system is fatally flawed.

  5. Dave says:

Then why are they permitted to vote?

  6. tcb says:

None of this is surprising. And then the author makes another common error in an article decrying spelling cluelessness, a grammar one

    less than 58 percent

Methinks the correct usage is “fewer than 58 percent”. Percent means “out of 100”. Thus the 58 out of 100 is a countable thing. When referring to countable things the correct usage is “fewer”. Fewer people, not less people. Less stupidity not fewer stupidity. Only when referring to masses or uncountable things does one use the word “less”

  7. Geno says:

Democrat run schools. Immigrants who could care less. There ya go.

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

      Geno = Full of Guano.

Children don’t learn because the family unit has been destroyed by Capitalism, and there is no longer a social imperative to learn, particularly when there is money to be made or tweets to post.

American adults are no so stupid that they can’t distinguish between objective reality and comic book fantasy.

This is why Hollywood is producing animated comic books for adults. American adults never intellectually advanced past their comic book reading pre-teens.

American government has grown corrupt and stupid, because the American electorate has grown too stupid to even know what rational, honest leadership looks like.

It looks like Iron man doesn’t it? Or maybe a terminator, or some Ice queen or Glinda the good witch.

  8. Cam says:

And I think that there is an argument to remove public education right there. The US pays more per child than any other country in the world and that’s the education they get. Time to end the indoctrination camps.

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

The more Republicans meddled with the school system, the worse it got.

Now teachers spend their days filling out forms to prove that they complied with the curriculum requirements, and trying to prep their students how to cram for the next standardized test.

      Where are the parents? Working.
Where is Billy after school? Working.

Thank you for the first intelligent response in this comments section. As an American History teacher in a rural public school I thank you. I can assure you that your statement is incredibly accurate.

      2. Wonkey says:

        You shouldn’t be teaching!

      3. Vendicar Decarian says:

Ya, well…. I just state the truth.

The ignorant knee jerk responses from RepubliKKKans just illustrate the real issues.

      4. sickofitall says:

Sadly, the article reveals what an education system operated by Liberal Democrats churns out – it ALSO reveals the fallout from Conservatives with “live and let live” philosophy who stood idly by and LET HAPPEN! We ALL deserve what we’ve GOT!

      5. Vendicar Decarian says:

The world is filled to the brim with Liberal school systems, and all of them perform better than those in America.

What is it about American Culture that makes it such a spectacular failure at everything?

Oh yes… Now I remember…. It’s because Americans are Exceptional.

    2. Johnny says:

Defund the schools! Give the funds to the police! It’s too late to try to teach these kids anything; all we can do is protect the rest of society from them.

      1. Vendicar Decarian says:

Well, the problem is… They are your replacements.

Maybe America needs to start importing more Mexicans.

        They are smarter.

  9. John says:

White and “Asian” Americans have intelligence scores on par with the “smartest” European countries… you can guess what the “diversity” test scores reflect
    Hint: not Europe

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

Asians score higher on IQ tests than white Americans.
White Americans score lower than Europeans.

This is probably due to the fact that Americans are genetically inferior due to Americans having originated from the low IQ dregs of Europe.

  10. Vendicar Decarian says:

    Truth is poison to Republicans.

80% of Americans believe in angels.

  12. TrashFinds says:

lawsuit.org studyfinds.org wtf is what would lawsuit.org be doing this for? bunch of click bait bullshit, probably isn’t even a real survey. What a dogsh1T site, how much are you paying Drudge for the links?

zero comparison between different generations, and we are supposed to come to the conclusion zoomers are not-informed compared to other generations?

  13. Mitch says:

Calling BS on this article. Link to the source was not provided, found no mention of independence day on Lawsuit.org. This article is obviously fabricated content.

  14. Ray Zebron says:

If you voted for Biden, you deserve the current and future cost of gas, groceries and utilities.

If you are a Capitalist, you deserve the current and future cost of gas, groceries and utilities.

There, I fixed it for you Ray.

  15. Lizzy says:

    But they know their pronouns.

  16. Johnny Kay says:

Well, at least they know about gender fluidity and white privilege!

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

Do they? You know about it because Faux news tells you what to think, and just like a trained dog, you obediently obey.

      1. Adam says:

        How many genders are there?

      2. Wonkey says:

Uhhhhhhhh, two from what I remember when I was playing doctor and nurse with the neighbor girl. I was only 8 but that is what I remember.

      3. Vendicar Decarian says:

Lets look at the definition of the word “gender” to see.

either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.

So by definition there is a spectrum of genders with no discernable boundaries other than at the extremes of male and female.

See how easy that was when you aren’t being willfully ignorant?

  17. Shawn says:

Did anyone notice a link to the actual poll? There isn’t a record of the poll on lawsuit.org. The site in question hasn’t posted to their twitter feed in two years.

  18. Arod says:

Are you sure? My daughter graduated from HS 5 years ago…today out of her 9 best friends, 5 are gay, and 1 thinks she is a boy. My daughter is the only one that is married. (She married a man)

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

      Who cares?

  19. Raoul Mendez says:

When all those real Catholics coming across the border start voting its going to be interesting to watch the democrats realize they are going to have to dump the woke left to get any of those votes

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

Given that Republicans are using every trick they can think of to stop free and fair elections in America, I don’t think voting is going to solve America’s Fascist Christian Republican problem.

  20. J says:

Survey reveals that 2 in 3 young adults don’t know who American declared its independence from in 1776!

    “American declared?”

    1. Vendicar Decarian says:

The article does prove it’s own premise doesn’t it?
