Best Perfumes For Women: Top 5 Fragrances Most Recommended By Experts

A nice perfume is the perfect finishing touch when getting ready for the day. And for many, when you smell good, you feel good. With so many scents to choose from, some prefer to choose a signature and stick with it, while others change it up depending on their mood or the occasion. Regardless, wearing some of the best perfumes is a way to make a statement, leave an impression, and express your individuality.

A large part of why perfume is so impactful is due to the way our brains associate scents with memory. The smell of a certain meal can take you right back to childhood, just as the whiff of a particular perfume might whisk you back to your wedding day, high school years, or to giving a loved one a hug.

Research has long explored this phenomenon, and recently, a team of scientists at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown found that this strong association has to do with the neurons in the brain. The research team focused on the primary olfactory cortex, which sits in the front of the brain. To put these olfactory neurons to the test, the team developed a custom-made puzzle filled with different odors for rats to make their way through. The rats sampled odors at four ends of the plus-shaped maze. Then, depending on the scent, they had to figure out where to find the reward. While the animals were solving the puzzle, the researchers monitored the activity of their neurons in a part of the primary olfactory cortex called the posterior piriform cortex.

So, whether you’re looking for a new signature scent or just to test something new, a great perfume will leave a lasting impression. From soft florals to bold spices, each scent has its own unique notes. To help narrow down your search for your next fragrance, StudyFinds searched 10 expert websites for their reviews of the best perfumes on the market. “As the name suggests, this top-rated fragrance from Viktor & Rolf —which over 10,000 Nordstrom customers love—is a cult favorite thanks to its floral notes of jasmine and rose, plus scents of warm vanilla and patchouli for added depth,” adds Harper’s Bazaar.

As an added bonus, Flowerbomb is a scent that’s sure to stick with you throughout the day. “I don’t know what kind of skin-gripping formula they dreamt up, but I was pleased to see just how long the scent lingered,” comments a Who What Wear reviewer. “I spritzed it on in the morning and wore it all day at work. Even after walking out of a (particularly sweaty) Spin class post-work, I swear I was still catching a whiff of it.”

2. Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium

Looking for a scent that will make a statement? Look no further. “The first word that comes to mind when we think of Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium is ‘seductive,'” says CNN. “If you’re looking for a fragrance that smells like pure luxury, look no further. With notes of black coffee, white flowers and vanilla, this will be your go-to date-night scent for sure.”

Reviewers say that this is a scent that demands to be worn. “It’s easy to liken it to the LBD tucked in your closet — it’s sleek, iconic, and too intriguing to resist,” boasts InStyle.

“Whether you take your coffee black or with a little shot of somethin’ somethin,’ you’ll love this spicy perfume from YSL,” adds Cosmopolitan. “Developed around notes of coffee, absinthe, and orange blossom, this long-lasting fragrance is the perfect kind of indulgent and seductive for your Saturday night out.”

3. Chanel N°5

If you had to name the most iconic perfume of all time, odds are, this is the one you’d name. With a long history and a classic scent, you can’t go wrong with Chanel N°5. “Chanel N°5 is one of those iconic fragrances that every woman should try at least once, especially as reviewers continue to share stories of buying the fragrance after seeing their elders wear it growing up,” says CNN.

Chanel N°5 is a perfect choice if you’re looking for a scent that is both recognizable and unique. Though the scent is an iconic classic, it also smells a bit different on every wearer. “When applied to skin, the perfume reacts with the wearer’s body chemistry to create a highly subjective effect,” explains Byrdie. “The blend of aldehydes and florals is layered over a base of vetiver, sandalwood, amber, vanilla, and patchouli to create a complex, lasting scent that definitely leaves an impression.”

“Initially an ultra-exclusive Christmas gift reserved for 100 of Chanel’s best clients, the scent would go on to become the most famous fragrance in the world,” adds Vogue. “Beaux’s blend of rose, jasmine, and synthetic aldehydes, an ingredient No. 5 would popularize, remains iconic 100 years later.”

4. Gucci Bloom

While some floral scents may seem best suited to an older woman, Gucci Bloom feels natural for any age. The fragrance brings a modern twist to a classic floral blend, making for a lovely mix of new and old. “This full-on floral perfume could easily be written off as a ‘grandma’ fragrance, but the notes of jasmine and Rangoon creeper — a fun south Indian plant that smells sweet and fruity — keep it feminine, flirty and youthful, making it an especially popular perfume for young women,” says WWD.

Byrdie reviewers note that Bloom can be applied once and enjoyed all day. “The fragrance is strong and long-lasting—as many Sephora shoppers point out—though in a good way, and also wears nicely, fading slowly and gradually.”

Clearly, this is a perfume bottle that won’t be collecting dust on your dresser for long. “Gucci Bloom is a classic floral fragrance that you’ll opt for again and again,” claims CNN. “Think of it as a light, soft, timeless option. One reviewer even notes, ‘Gucci has finally placed class and sophistication in a bottle.'”

5. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 is the perfect fragrance for someone debating between warm and woodsy and bright and floral scents. “Notes of amber and cedarwood balance out the jasmine that’s out the forefront of the fragrance, making for a well-balanced, woody floral,” says Byrdie. “It’s sophisticated and complex, an unexpected pairing that blends beautifully and is sure to appeal to those who like either woody or floral scents alike.”

While this fragrance is certainly on the higher end of price points, a little goes a long way. “Perfect for a romantic night or those who make every day a luxurious celebration, it’s an incredibly rich and long-lasting perfume (seriously, one spritz will linger until the next day),” notes WWD.

“Created as a collaboration between the perfumer and Baccarat to celebrate the crystal manufacturer’s 250th birthday, this popular scent is, frankly, a masterpiece,” adds Harper’s Bazaar. “A combination of woody notes, amber, jasmine and other florals, it’s sophisticated and never overpowering.”

  1. Ugh! None of these are any good! How about Sintra by Memo? How about For your Love by Minzensir? How about Gris Dior by Dior? How about Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian???

    1. Dior I had once it made my colleagues heave so overpowering and sickly
fresh Powdery fragrances are the nicest
Like Gucci bloom and kenzo flower !

      1. I love maison Charles brosseau , ,” Ombre Rose,” it has a beautiful powder scent as well as jasmine and gardenia undertones but so soft. He also has one called ,”wish”. I found them in a little Parisian boutique. I love Mugeler . I love some of the Chanel scents I have the original and it does not quite do it for me . Victor & Rolof also Armani when they had diamonds and Alfred sung coach rose and the baccarat I splurged.

    2. Jadore by Dior, twilly d’ Hermes, pure d’or. I love them and need to have them when the need arises.

  2. Hello you list Chanel Chance as one of the best, but pictured in the article is Chance Eau Tendre ( the pink one ) and you don’t specify the Eau de Toilette or the Eau de Parfum which are 2 different scents. The original chance is yellow and doesn’t smell that great

    1. Why do all these experts mention the well rolled out Chanel No5 but Never mention CoCo Chanel in the black and gold packaging..heady, sultry, sexy, gets better as the night goes on.beautiful.try it!

  3. So sorry but none of these perfumes smell good, the smell that never goes away or unforgettable is channel 5 it’s here to stay forever! People of all ages are still buying it… don’t ever think by not mentioning it doesn’t mean that it’s not popular…
From my 22year old, my 41 year old & myself of almost 70.. love that sexy, clean smell of channel #5.. thank you

  4. I’m sorry but these are super basic.
Head turners like Dior Hypnotic Poison, Initio Side Effect, MFK’S Gentle Fluidity Gold, Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, Byredo Mohave Ghost and even Flowerbomb by Viktor&Rolf would have been better choices

    1. I personally think body shop Japanese musk is beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
But I always buy tresor the most beautiful perfume ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  5. Smelling like Grandma? Good grief! My mother wore Chanel 5, and I wear my own custom designer perfume, (fully grandson approved). I opt for classic ingredients first, for fresh notes throughout the day. Channel 5 is always intriguing.

  6. I have them all. I did give away the Black Opium because on me it was nothing but vanilla. My favorite perfumes are the original Midnight Poison and Chanel Coromandel. Almost all Chanel actually 🙂

    1. This suggestion regards the verbage under Gucci
Bloom. Perhaps the proof reader missed this faux pax. Rather than referring to women as “older” try the word mature. Heaven knows if one is lucky enough to live long enough, we will prefer
to be called mature women. Loving a floral scent isn’t about one’s age it is about one’s taste!

  7. But your list did not include Elle! It’s scent is
    Subtle and long lasting.
I’ve been asked quite often what perfume am I wearing? Seems to be noticed on clothing the next day. I purchased it @ Walgreens after a “tester”. I was “Sold”!!!

  8. I wear and own every single one of these except for Maison Baccarat. I have mixed feelings for Chanel No. 5 as it smells a little odd and strong on me. I ordered the 100th, I believe, anniversary bottle of it and I don’t wear it often. But this list for sure forgot Tom Ford, Creed, Jo Malone, and basically all of the Chanel’s! I have a fragrance obsession and wear something different everyday according to how I feel and wearing.

  9. The list you had for perfume is ok but you can’t please all women when you do perfume it is just the truth everyone have a different body chemistry and will not smell the same on everyone ,everyone have their favorite period!

  10. Oscar De Larenta beautiful bottle beautiful perfume! Anais Anais, Obsession, and so many more! This list no thanks!

  11. according to experts of what? no5 the worst fragrance ever, which fails to be liked after every blind test. i also doesn’t different on each individual, it was a chanel marketing.
seriously, where is a guerlain? experts everywhere.

  12. Estee Lauder is my go to for the most part. Cinnabar for late fall and winter. I just tried Beautiful Magnolia and it’s a wonderful spring fragrance.

D&G Dolce is a fun fragrance for the summer.

  13. I personally love the Guerlain range, especial Le petite robe noir and Mon Guerlain. Shalimar is gorgeous, as is Champs Élysées for a lovely floral. All last all day.

  14. Yes, I do want to make a complaint I Ordered some Chanel No.5! They sent me Watch to wear when walking and some Ear plugs, never got any Chanel No.5 which is the only thing I wanted! People should not make false advertising get People money and you never get the Product! That was Over a month ago so I doubt that I will ever get what I Ordered if so it will be Of a surprise to me! I guess that’s what I get for messing with Facebook! Never again! Just want that Out there!

  15. Well I’m rarely on trend. My all time favorite is Chanel No. 22.

I can’t afford to buy it anymore. I still have some left for very special occasions. L’Heure Bleue is my current special go to. I also enjoy Oscar, Opium, Jessica McClintock, Idylle and White Shoulders.
