There’s nothing quite like a perfectly crunchy piece of bread popping up from the toaster to get your day started. Nourishing, delicious, and as easy as breakfast gets– adding toast to your morning routine is a no-brainer. However, not all kitchen appliances are created equal. Many products on the market will leave you with uneven toastiness, a long cook time, or poor quality. Investing in one of the best toasters can make your morning routine a breeze and never have you wondering “what’s for breakfast?” again.
Research suggests that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it’s also the one most often skipped by Americans. Breakfast refuels the supply of glucose to boost energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential nutrients required for good health.
A recent study found that people who wait too long to have their first meal of the day may be at greater risk of diabetes. The study by Northwestern University researchers shows that people who eat breakfast before 8:30 a.m. have lower blood sugar levels and less insulin resistance. Another survey of 2,000 Americans found that your career may even benefit from starting the day off with the proper nutrition. The poll, split between 1,000 breakfast eaters and 1,000 who don’t eat breakfast — reveals that those who have a morning meal are more likely to receive a promotion at work. Pretty crazy, right?
Whole grains, like whole wheat toast, are a particularly great and simple way to add more nutrients to your diet. “[Research] suggests that there is some evidence for dietary whole grain intake to be beneficial in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colorectal, pancreatic, and gastric cancers. The potential benefits of these findings suggest that the consumption of 2 to 3 servings per day (~45 g) of whole grains may be a justifiable public health goal,” The National Library of Medicine writes.
Buying a toaster that’s both reliable and easy to use can help you meet those goals with no effort at all, which is why StudyFinds sought out to find the best toasters on the market. For our findings, we visited 10 of the leading expert websites to see which toasters were rated the best. Our list is ranked based on the most-recommended toasters across these sites.
The List: Best Toasters, According To Experts
1. Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster
Whether it’s for bread, bagels, or English muffins, you’re sure to get the perfect even toast every time with the top-rated Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster.
“This sleek, smart toaster makes it feel like you’re living in the future, and you may become spoiled after using its special features. There’s the handy ‘lift and look’ button that you can press to check on how your toast is looking instead of having to stop the cycle just to get a peek. You’ll also find a button labeled ‘a bit more,’ which you can use to add a little extra time to your toasting session,” Food and Wine writes.
The toaster features two long-slots, five browning settings, and one-touch LED lights, in addition to a stylish design and sleek look.
“The stainless steel two-slot Breville BTA720XL Bit More Toaster produced the most consistent toast of any model we tested—golden brown all over with no white patches or lines—even after we made several back-to-back batches,” The New York Times writes.
2. Cuisinart 2-Slice Compact Toaster
Straight-to-the-point, reliable, and one of the most affordable models on the market, the Cuisinart 2-Slice Compact Toaster is no doubt the best budget toaster you can find.
“This inexpensive, ordinary-looking toaster browned bread more evenly than almost any other model we tested. Toasters aren’t known for their longevity, so we like that the Cuisinart is covered by a three-year warranty,” The New York Times writes.
The toaster features seven darkness settings and additional modes for bagel toasting, defrosting, and reheating.
“The CPT-122 was also one of the faster toasters we tested; it popped out fully-toasted bread in about a minute and a half (we found that the average was a little over two minutes). And, it was one of the most compact, making it ideal for small living spaces,” Insider writes.
3. Smeg 2 and 4-Slice Toaster
Both Smeg’s 2 and 4-Slice Toasters topped experts’ lists for those a solid luxury buy that focuses not only on the toasting itself, but on an iconic retro look.
“If good looks are a high priority in your kitchen, the Smeg Two-Slice Toaster is worth the price. With its bright, glossy finish (that comes in nine colors!) and its 1950s aesthetic, this sturdy toaster is a beauty that takes up minimal counter space. When you select a setting, it locks into place so you know you’ve set it precisely and extra wide slots ensure that you can fit thicker cut slices of bread. In our testing, it toasted evenly and showed a good range of toast shades,” Good Housekeeping writes.
Unlike many toasters that come in solely silver steel or white plastic, Smeg’s line of toasters offers nine colors, making it perfect for that kitchen renovation you’ve been meaning to get to.
“We were suspicious that the Smeg toaster was going to be all style and no substance, but we were wrong. Using this machine is like having a little retro Italian sports car on your kitchen counter, with a well-built and expertly proportioned cherry red exterior, a sleek chrome toasting lever that sits in the hand like a gearshift, and a minimalist, intuitive control knob that spins with a satisfying click,” Epicurious writes.
4. Hamilton Beach Expert 2-Slice Toaster
Hamilton Beach’s 2-Slice Toaster is another great budget pick that will have bagel-afficianados rejoicing.
“The slots are wider and longer than what you’ll find on many other toasters, so you don’t have to cut or smash your bread to fit. Along with the seven-setting temperature knob, there’s a whole other dial to select what type of bread you’re toasting: white, sweet, artisan, whole grain, gluten-free, and, of course, bagel. When you toast bagels, the machine toasts one side for a nice crunch and then just warms the other for a perfect balance,” Food and Wine writes.
Many also love this toaster for its simple setting and no-fuss options.
“The Hamilton Beach has a simple, modern look—just a couple of buttons, knobs, and a lever—and the ideal size footprint: 13 x 7.5 x 9.13 inches. It was also one of the easiest toasters to use. It doesn’t come with lots of extra features, but it has everything you need to toast breakfast fare,” Forbes writes.
