Remember that the survey does not measure depression but rather self reports and treatment experience. Men are less likely to recognize and admit depression and often react differently. The gap between males and females could be real but also includes an element of differences in symptoms, awareness, reporting, and seeking treatment. As an example, females are more likely to respond to the same internal feeling by expressing sadness where males may express anger. The survey is useful to identify trends over time but the actual numbers may or may not be accurate.
