Best Hair Ties: Top 5 Brands Most Recommended By Style Experts

Those of us with longer hair know there’s one must-have accessory: a hair tie. You never know when you’ll want to toss your hair up into a quick ponytail or bun. That’s why many of us wear at least one hair tie or scrunchie on our wrist at all times. The best hair ties can quickly pull your hair out of your face while working, exercising, or relaxing.

Lots of us like to change up our hairstyles from time to time. A recent survey of 2,000 American women shows not all of them are home runs. The poll’s results find the average woman has experienced four completely botched hairstyles over the years. That includes six different haircut styles and four dye jobs.

Our hair changes as we get older too. Respondents admit the biggest things they notice are dryness and overall damage, both at 41 percent. Another issue? Thirty-five percent say their hair also doesn’t hold styling quite like it used to. So, it’s no surprise that 28 percent of women in the poll are starting to feel frustration with their hair. Half feel they’re currently in a ‘hairstyle rut’ and don’t know what to do. While another 49 percent are simply too scared to try something new. Luckily, hair ties are versatile in many different styles and may inspire some experimentation with a new look.

Not sure which hair tie will work best for your lovely locks? Don’t worry! StudyFinds compiled a list of the top five brands from ten expert websites to find the best hair ties that are cute and last for months. As always, we’d like to see your own recommendations in the comments below!

The List: Best Hair Ties, According to Beauty Experts

1. GIMME

Topping our list, are these hair ties from GIMME Beauty that get rave reviews. Gimme’s No Break Thick Hair Ties are great for curls or waves. “These are Gimme’s thickest style, meant for very thick and curly hair, but if the style appeals to you and you don’t need such a heavy-duty tie, Gimme offers a variety of hair ties based on your hair density,” according to New York Magazine.

These ties work well to hold hair in place during a workout. “The hair bands offer a firm hold, zero dent, no snagging, numerous colors, zero seams, and don’t cause headaches. They are designed to gently slide out of your hair when you want to remove them,” adds RunToTheFinish.

Why do they work so well? The “microfiber hair elastics are thick and grip your hair without the danger of pulling it out,” notes Runner’s World. Plus, the brand boasts these hair ties will keep their elasticity for at least six months with regular use.

2. Goody

Found in most drug stores, Goody’s Ouchless Elastic Hair Ties are ideal for medium and thicker hair types. “These hair ties can create various styles, including long-lasting braids, messy buns, and ponytails,” according to Hollywood Life

“They go on and come off easily without breaking your hair. Sleek but strong, don’t let their frail structure fool you. They can easily hold 10x more ponytails with their thick inner core and braided design,” suggests Pinkvilla.

You can find these wallet-friendly hair ties in multi-packs and many different colors to suit your style. However, if a scrunchie is more your speed, Goody makes those too. Byrdie praises Goody’s Ouchless Jersey Scrunchies, adding “we love it for its no-snag and no-damage benefits, preventing even long hair from tangling.” Although some reviewers say these scrunchies aren’t as stretchy as some of its competitors.

3. KITSCH

Kitsch’s Spiral Hair Tie is made of a waterproof plastic coil that will remind you of an old telephone cord. “The smooth plastic and the spiral construction of the coils help with tangling and prevent breakage when you remove them,” notes The Blast.

These affordable ties come in four or eight-packs and in various hues to match your hair color. Stylecraze gives it ‘Best Tangle-Preventing Design’ accolades, adding they “prevent ponytail bumps by spreading the pressure over a greater surface of your hair. These hair ties also prevent headaches as they are not too tight on your hair. They can be worn as bracelets when not used.”

Another KITSCH product that scores big, are the brand’s microfiber towel scrunchies that are perfect for wet hair. “The Kitsch Towel Scrunchie is sold in seven colors and prints, including serene tie-dye and bold leopard patterns, which can be bought individually or in bundles,” points out InStyle. However, some reviewers suggest the scrunchie’s thickness limits its twisting capabilities.

4. Swirly Curly

Swirly Curly’s tension-free hair ties snap in place, making the Snappee Hair Tie ideal for natural hair types. “A must-try for curly, bushy, and thick tresses; these don’t pull or give your fingers a cramp while making those multiple loops,” according to Pinkvilla.

Users praise its durable grip and versatility. New York Magazine notes, you can “combine two Snappee hair ties should you need extra length.”

These hair ties come in black and brown. “Though they are a bit pricey, the company offers discounts depending on pack size. These hair ties are also machine-washable, giving you lots of mileage out of them,” points out Byrdie.

5. Slip

You may have heard of Slip’s luxury pure silk pillowcases. But the brand also makes silk hair ties and scrunchies. Celebrities swear by them. “Specially made with silk to prevent hair breakage, Slip’s scrunchies are a great investment. Take one to the gym, pair it with your pajamas, or for a glamorous evening look,” suggests Harper’s BAZAAR.

“Slip offers hair ties in a variety of sizes, but their Small Scrunchies are ideal for fine hair. Their smaller size ensures that the tie will stay firmly in place, even on fine or thin hair,” adds InStyle

Slip’s Skinny Scrunchies also come in various color packs. “The soft material doesn’t leave any creases, and we even found that they’re comfortable to sleep in—so accidental naps are encouraged,” notes Byrdie. One drawback? They are more expensive, so consider them a ‘treat-yourself’ purchase.
