The survey reveals that within their first year at home, respondents’ dogs went through 27 toys, destroyed four pieces of furniture, and slipped out of their leash six times. However, it isn’t all rough times; from helping their owners through an average of three new jobs and three new homes, 64 percent of respondents don’t know where they’d be without their dog’s love and support. So, while bringing a puppy into the home can be daunting at first, one must remember the payoff of a best friend at the other end of those terrible twos.

5. Presa Canario

The Presa Canario takes the coveted number five on today’s ranking. Originating in the Canary Islands, “Affectionate and docile when relaxing with its owner, the Presa Canario becomes a completely different animal when threatened. Wary of strangers, it’s a breed that can be aggressive and so is one probably best avoided when looking for a family pet,” comments The Scotsman.

“Presa Canarios are recognized by their wide jaw and powerful, square head. Although first appearances may look daunting, they are very docile with their family. This courageous dog breed is distrustful of strangers but should accept strangers if their owner accepts them. The breed commands attention and would likely be a deterrent for any intruder. Still, their loving nature makes them a great addition to your home. Like many other strong-willed dog breeds, the Presa Canario requires a great deal of training. “The Perro de Presa Canario has a strong and muscular build, with a height that ranges between 21 to 29 inches and weighs between 80 and 150 pounds.
