Does the upcoming solar eclipse signal the second coming of Jesus? In all likelihood, no, but that hasn’t stopped people from speculating that it does.
The New Testament is peppered with references to Jesus’ “second coming,” the time when Christians believe Jesus will return to Earth, the wicked will be judged, and the righteous rewarded. The Apostle Paul writes about it in his letters, and the Gospels portray Jesus speaking about it.
The upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, which will be visible over parts of North America, has brought with it a slew of predictions that Jesus might be returning sooner rather than later. I am a scholar of early Christian literature whose research focuses on how people read, understand and sometimes misunderstand biblical texts.
Religious theories surrounding this eclipse are part of a larger pattern of attempts to find meaning in astronomical events that goes back thousands of years.
Finding meaning in the skies
One of the more famous examples from the ancient world of people finding meaning in the skies occurred in 44 B.C.E., when a comet appeared in the skies over Italy just four short months after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Roman authors Pliny the Elder and Suetonius claimed that the comet was visible for about a week and that it was so bright, it could be spotted in the late afternoon.
Many Romans interpreted its appearance and lingering presence as a sign that Caesar had ascended to the heavens and had taken a seat among the many gods of Rome. Caesar’s deification was made official by a vote of the Roman senate less than two years later.
A few examples from the past 30 years further illustrate this phenomenon. In December 2020, speculation ran wild in some Christian circles that a planetary conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn signaled the return of the fabled “Star of Bethlehem” that led the wise men to the newborn Jesus.
For at least 10 years, televangelist John Hagee has promoted theories linking various “blood moons” as signs that the apocalypse is approaching.
A tragic example is the religious movement known as Heaven’s Gate. Members of this movement believed that there was a spacecraft hidden in the tail of the Hale-Bopp Comet, which appeared in 1997. This spacecraft, they thought, was coming to transport them to a higher level of consciousness. In March 1997, 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate movement committed ritualized, mass suicide through a lethal combination of phenobarbital, vodka and asphyxiation.
Chasing shadows
It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where such interpretations of celestial events originate.
In the case of the upcoming eclipse, one of the images that has fueled predictions of Jesus’ second coming simply notes southern Illinois as the location where the upcoming eclipse will overlap the path of the last North American solar eclipse in 2017.
From this image, two theories have emerged: First, that these eclipses are separated by roughly seven years, which has symbolic significance in biblical literature as a number indicating completeness and perfection. Second, on charting the paths of these eclipses on a map, they appear to form a cross.
Some Christians have taken this as evidence that the upcoming eclipse is an indication that Jesus’ return is imminent.
But there is no logical basis for this theory.
For starters, solar eclipses are not quite as rare as they seem. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blots out all or some of the Sun’s light. They seem rare because they affect only the narrow strip of land that falls in the shadow of the Moon.
According to NASA, there has been an average of 2.5 eclipses per year over the past 1,000 years.
The phenomenon of two eclipses crossing paths is also rather unremarkable. Looking at a map of eclipse paths between 2001 and 2025, it is clear that eclipses frequently cross paths; of the 15 solar eclipses during this span of time, only two did not cross paths.
One could argue that the North American eclipses of 2017 and 2024 are unique because of the seven years that separate them. But this isn’t logical in terms of the larger argument that some are making. These eclipses – on August 21, 2017, and April 8, 2024 – are separated not by seven years but by six and a half years, or 2,422 days to be exact. Another pair of eclipses that crossed paths in the Pacific Ocean – on July 22, 2009, and March 9, 2016 – were separated by the same number of days.
Seek and you will find
Most of these end times predictions are rooted in North American evangelical views on the apocalypse, many of which originated or at least share an affinity with evangelical author Hal Lindsey’s popular book, “The Late Great Planet Earth.”
In this book, Lindsey predicted that the apocalypse would occur in the 1980s, and to make his argument, he stitched together a number of disparate events and phenomena to construct an apocalyptic narrative that included Soviet helicopters, the establishment of the state of Israel and nuclear warfare.
Lindsey was wrong, of course; the 1980s did not bring about the apocalypse. But this way of thinking – of seeking to find significance in various random events like eclipses – persists among some Christians.
The difference between this pairing of the 2017 and 2024 eclipses and the ones from 2009 and 2016 is simple: The most recent pairing crosses over the United States. Patterns emerge when and where they are sought, and much depends on the aims of the people doing the seeking.
The second coming of Jesus is undeniably a topic of conversation among New Testament authors. But it is interesting to note is that there is little agreement among these authors when it comes to timing. What is presented in the Gospels is different from what is presented in the letters of Paul. And both of these are quite different from what is found in the book of Revelation.
But these authors do share a sense that the timing of “the end” is ultimately mysterious and unknowable. And this would suggest that attempting to predict such timing by means of things like eclipses is, at the very least, not terribly “biblical.”

If you are a Christian, you should take the Bible seriously, and in an adult way. The entirety of the NT authors and Jesus himself, expected the “End of the age” and “the judgement” to come in the first century. And it did! All was fulfilled in 70AD.

Let he without sin, cast the first stone! Perhaps he did some awful things over there. Not excusing him, but look how young he was, around the time he was over there. From the time, you and I saw that picture of him with Epstein, I wonder if he ever went back over there again. Was he President, when he went over there? I seriously doubt it. He looked way to young.

And that answer to this certain question, this radio host asked him, even drew loud gasps from the audience that was there listening, which Trump looked like he didn’t understand why they did that! I have to admit, I did it too, sitting here at home, listening to it.

Can you prove outside the bible Jesus said this? If it’s true, it’s true OUTSIDE the bible, and I am interested in your evidence that proves Jesus said this. You are correct that there are Christians who believe that the solar eclipse is a ‘sign’ of Jesus’ return.
However, the greater majority of Christians who study Biblical prophecy and hold it as sacred and relevant, believe that the solar eclipse may be a sign, but not of Jesus’s Second Coming, but a one of many signs that herald the End Times which precede the ‘harpazo’ or ‘rapture’ of the Church before the 7-year Tribulation begins, as described in Revelation. These Christians, who often refer to themselves as ‘Watchers’, are largely in agreement that the frequency of “End Time” events has been accelerating in recent years, and commonly refer to this perceived acceleration as ‘The Convergence’.
The End Times events which make up the Convergence begin with the rebirth of Israel as a nation-state for the Jews in May, 1948, but also include the Blood Moons you referred to, which fell precisely on the major Jewish Feast Days (more accurately referred to as the Lord’s Feasts), the astronomical conjunction referred to as ‘The Revelation 12 Sign’ from Sept. 2017, several comets, and yes, the alignment of 8 planets in a row as will be seen from Jerusalem on April 8th, and yes, the upcoming solar eclipse of April 8th. The uninformed reflexively dismiss and criticize any consideration that astronomical events could possibly be ‘signs’ from God of upcoming event and are akin to the forbidden practice of astrology. However, in Genesis 1:14 we read that God put the sun, moon, and stars in place as “signs” for marking “seasons”… which is an unfortunate translation of the Hebrew word “moedim”, which is more accurately translated as “appointed times” or “the Lord’s Feast Days”.
Biblical astronomy has nothing to do with astrology but does have it’s roots in the Bible. From Blood Moons, meteorites, eclipses, the “belt of Orion”, the Star of Bethlehem, to Jesus referring to himself as “the bright morning star”, aka Venus. What do you think of that?
Perhaps the way to think about the ‘signs’ is that they are similar to signs one sees while driving on the Freeway. The signs server as a notice or warning of what is coming up soon, not of what is happening at that exact spot, like a wet floor sign in the grocery store.
Perhaps more people should be asking themselves, “What if…?”
Is it true that the 2017 eclipse passed over 7 places called Salem which means peace? And is it true the April eclipse occurs 7 years later and passes over 7 places called Nineveh after passing over Jonah in Texas? Is it true the two form a cross which intersects near a place called Rapture? If all this is true what are the odds it’s not a sign from God?
I have seen him! As a child @ 4 years old, playing outside in a summer rain storm, making mud pies and singing, it thundered, I looked up to the rain cloud and there was Christ watching me! It is written: “Those who are pure in heart shall see God”!

They’ll be a one world government, and a one world financial or monetary system, and a one world religion system. I wonder if all three of these all start at the same time, now that I’m looking at them all.
I’ve studied bible prophecy for many years now, and I’d love to run it by you, and get your opinion on what I feel I was shown about how and when the Trib starts, and the small part, but the beginning process, that Trump has to do with it, and then passes the torch on to others (so to speak).Or in other words, once he’s back in office (which he HAS TO get back in), he picks up that “peace agreement” he made, and once he gets MANY more signatures on it (for peace with Israel), Trump will hand it over to them, the “many” who have signed up with….peace with Israel. Much more to say, to make it make sense, but perhaps another time.
That is, if you agree, that the 7 year Trib STARTS/BEGINS only when these two leaders of Israel and Palestine sit down together, to sign a 7 year peace treaty? A peace deal that every Pres, since Carter days, that has tried and failed to acquire that “golden ring”, so to speak.
(And now, the line of presidents has been severed/stopped, because NOW, today….THIS “president” has no interest in trying to show publicly, that HE could be the one, that could bring a peace between the leaders of Israel and Palestine. How can he, when it seems to me, that he’s too busy trying to decide each day, on who’s side he’s want to play on!! Here’s maybe an idea for ya. Maybe out of all the people that you grew up with, and they told you something to do with the future, and you know for a fact (somehow), that it’s a true subject, that it is in the bible, and has to do with prophecy, or endtimes. You may not know everything about the subject, BUT THAT would be a good starting point to get on the diving board with, lol
Now, what I don’t understand about people, is that they have, in front of their faces, and under their fingertips, is a VERY POWERFUL machine. And it can make ANYONE in the world, just like Einstein, but even smarter!!
If someone put their whole brain, their whole thoughts, into being smarter than anyone else in their immediate surroundings, or just anywhere in the world, they could do it easily. I suppose it’s to simple to say, the internet has all the knowledge in the world, and anyone can tap right into it, that is, if they wanted to. Anyone and everyone, could educate themselves, and be smarter than anyone else in the world, but ONLY if they put their mind on it!
And so, it goes with learning anything and everything about the bible, about bible prophecy, A to Z!
And if you didn’t want to educate yourself, there is HUNDREDS of people, teachers, that could BE YOUR teacher, ONLINE! And NO one but YOU, could know what your up too. Like porn, you could educate yourself on ANYTHING in the bible, from Genesis to Revelation, IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN HOME!! No has to know, so lock your bedroom door, and get to work….NO! I meant on the bible, silly! lol…
Start small, and work up to bigness…NO, I meant the education part, silly!
OK, I hope I’m getting across to you. Start on one small subject, one word that interests you (from the bible, or in the subject of prophecy). If you can’t think of one, ask someone, or wait days or weeks, till a subject is brought up. Anyway, I can help with names of prophecy teachers to listen to, I have many bible prophecy websites you can read, or just look over them. Ask me for just one, if you like. Sometimes, with a little help from someone, you end up learning enough on your own, that you don’t need a “helper” anymore!
And I’ve said enough. Except that you should really hurry and get started on prophecy education, because I feel that we only have a year or two, maybe 3, left, before the 7 year Tribulation begins. (What’s that? Look it up! ) That’s the “beginning of the end”, and it’s NOT good, well Christians don’t worry too much about it.
One more thing I’m going to say, and I’m not too proud to tell someone that I’m ever wrong about something. When I’m wrong, I’ll admit it! And so, with that, I’ll say that I’ve been putting something I feel is coming soon, in comments everywhere online, for the past year and a half, and I may be wrong, but I seriously don’t think so. I don’t know how you feel about OBiden or Trump, so I better wait to see who you support, before I say anymore of what I feel is coming at the end of this year…..

Thankfully, fewer and fewer people believe this nonsense
Why are you even here? Just to ridicule peoples faith? And make bigoted comments?
Is Christianity the only one that is nonsense? Or do you ridicule Muslims, Hindu, or any of the OTHER world religions? If not, you are a coward.
Wow! So you know that we’re living in the last days too? Very good of you to know something from the bible!

And you wonder why “fewer and fewer people believe this nonsense”!!
When are these people ever going to realize that he isn’t coming back until HE is ready….not when they think he is.
That is correct!!!

I’m wondering how much more EVIL can this world get, before God will step in!
Like for one example, look how many people died or were physically harmed, because of some companies who KNEW what was going to happen, and no one could take them to courts!
That’s just ONE thing, I could name hundreds more. Any day you can read the headlines online, and just yesterday, investigater’s or some authority looking for a 2 or 3 yr old boy, found his clothes some distance from where they found him. I couldn’t read the article, that was enough!
And yes, where were his parents, or mother or father? Could you imagine loving your child very much, and then losing your child in one blink of an eye, and then someone finds…clothes and the remains?
How do I still believe in God after that, and so many more stories? Because I know Satan (and all his demons) are here on this earth, and he cause the WORST of pain!
The demon who did this to this child will get theirs, and it won’t be a walk in the park either!!
And the articles about animals, dogs, cats, who can’t defend themselves as individuals torture them…and well that’s enough!!
I just wish the 7 year Tribulation will hurry up and get here, and if I’m right, in what I feel I was shown, it won’t be much longer now. The end of this year, or sometime next year….
