Yes, TikTok’s ‘sleepy girl’ mocktail may actually help you sleep

It seems like the “wellness girlies” have a remedy for just about everything these days. This time, they’re whipping something up to help you sleep better. If you struggle to get a good night’s rest, you’re not alone. Now, there’s a trendy TikTok drink that claims to help you get your hours back, containing tart cherry juice and magnesium powder. So, is it worth the hype?

The ‘sleepy girl’ mocktail recipe:

  • 1/2 cup pure tart cherry juice
  • 1 tablespoon of magnesium powder
  • A little sparkling water to balance things out

Then, all you do is stir it together and sip away until you doze off.

Does it actually work?

Nobody will have the same experience with it. Several people have shared their positive experiences with the drink, while others have said it didn’t do much except make them wake up and use the bathroom multiple times during the night.

However, here’s why this mocktail might be worth giving it a shot. The main components, tart cherry juice and magnesium powder, have been shown to support sleep and relaxation.

Tart cherry juice is uniquely high in melatonin, which is a hormone our body naturally makes to support sleep. In the absence of light at night, our body begins to suppress cortisol levels and increase melatonin levels to support sleep quality. Some research has shown that the additional melatonin from an outside source, like tart cherry juice, can help you get a better night’s sleep as it combines with your body’s existing supply.

Tart cherry juice also contains a bit of tryptophan, an amino acid that gets converted to serotonin, which also supports sleep. Other foods that can provide melatonin are milk, eggs, and nuts.

Magnesium is a mineral that is not only involved in thousands of reactions within the body, but it has been shown to benefit conditions like insomnia. Magnesium regulates neurotransmitters (which send signals between cells in the body and brain) that are related to sleep quality.

While supplements are a popular choice for getting reliable and consistent amounts of magnesium, some food sources include avocados, legumes, nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens.

We all know sleep is incredibly important for overall well-being. It keeps your body and mind happy and healthy. However, it isn’t always easy to get a good night’s rest. Thousands have tried the trendy TikTok sleep mocktail to see if it helps with that.

Given that the active ingredients are tart cherry juice and magnesium, it makes sense as to why this drink could work. For most people, adding the sleepy girl to your routine doesn’t come with a ton of risks. Still, if you want to try it out, talk with a healthcare provider about any chronic illnesses you have or medications you take, just to make sure there aren’t any contraindications.

  1. Brilliant. A large dose of magnesium before going to bed. Ever wonder why there is a laxative named “Milk of Magnesia”?

Just take a very small dose…500mcg (not grams) or less about an hour before bedtime. Avoid reading your phone or computer.
