NEW YORK — Over half of Americans feel like they’re in imminent danger at least once a day. A new poll of 2,000 Americans analyzed how they feel about their personal safety and found 52 percent feel on edge every day.
Younger Americans were the most likely to feel concerned about their safety on a daily basis – with 75 percent of those between 25 and 34 agreeing with this statement compared to just 50 percent of those 45 to 54.
Dark streets and sidewalks trigger their anxiety the most, followed by neighborhoods they aren’t too familiar with. Next in line were parking garages and riding alone in a rideshare or taxi. Speaking of rideshare services, 39 percent of respondents completely avoid them because they don’t feel safe taking them. This jumps to 50 percent for those between 25 and 34.
Top safety tip: share your location
Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Arlo, the survey asked respondents what tips and tricks they use to make themselves feel safer and found 56 percent share their location with someone “just in case.” Gen Z and millennial respondents were the most likely to use this tactic, with 62 percent of those between 18 and 24 and 65 percent of those 25 to 34 sharing their location with someone.
Respondents also revealed the top things they’ll have on their person for safety and peace of mind while traveling. The most popular items are pepper spray (40%) and a personal safety app on their phone (40%). One in three respondents have an alert button or device as well as a self-defense keychain.
The top safety measure Americans take when they meet someone new is linking up in a public place (58%), followed by sharing their location with someone (43%). In fact, the average respondent shares their location when meeting someone new three times a month. Americans between 25 and 34 are the most cautious when it comes to this – sharing they do this an average of five times a month.
“Communicating your whereabouts with a trusted contact is a simple tactic to enable a greater sense of security,” says Lily Knowles, SVP of Marketing and Customer Care for Arlo, in a statement. “The survey results illuminate an uneasy population, further underscoring the need to prioritize personal safety – both on-the-go and at home.”
Nervous in our own homes?
The survey also asked respondents about their safety in the comfort of their own homes and found 42 percent don’t feel safe when they’re home alone. Forty-five percent avoid living on the ground or first floors of apartment buildings out of fear of home invasions.
To combat this, 46 percent of respondents have a home security system – and younger respondents were the most likely to have a system. Sixty percent of those between 25 and 34 years-old have a home security system, followed by 57 percent of 35 to 44-year-olds and 55 percent of 18 to 24 year-olds.
A home security system is the top safety measure Americans take in their homes, followed by getting a dog and installing cameras or motion lights.
“Feeling safe is a fundamental need we all share, and the good news is that there’s many precautionary measures people have nowadays to take charge of their personal safety and security of their home and loved ones,” Knowles says. “From installing smart security systems and cameras at home, to using a personal safety app for direct access to emergency help on-the-go, there’s a range of advanced technologies that leverage AI or live support to not only bring peace of mind, but provide essential assistance when it’s needed most.”

The “good job” generation where the child, and for that matter adult, is told they are wonderful and special whether their filling a diaper or meeting a sales quota.

If you have a car newer than 7 years old, it to is listening to and tracking you. Of course, we have license plate readers also expanding though we are beginning to see these being vandalized.

I am sorry, but I know and have known young females. Most young females are sex and physically vulnerable. Unfortunately, there are weirdo men that thrive (sick twist) on intimidating sexy, young females. Especially alone on first floor apartments.

This may explain why I and my male friends leave this bathroom window open (there was a line-of-sight across the street) whilst females always insist it be closed all the way.
I was more consistently afraid until vigorously training in MMA. Nonetheless, I have been jumped before and since here in Philadelphia. At least now I am familiar with fighting. Humans get jumped as a matter of course. Hasn’t it always been like that in a city?

Here in Philadelphia, there is often a palpable feeling of imminent ultra-violence. Naturally, if not consciously resisting it, there is a visceral enveloping fear. Feeling of imminent ultra-violence on the train, at the store, walking past several men is often there.

Clearly the survey responses were largely from people living in cities, mostly run by America-hating, left wing nutjobs that have ruined all of our once-great cities. It’s no wonder they feel this way. If you polled ppl in the suburbs (not near large cities) or in the fly-over states the responses would be quite different.

If you look at the crime in those red states it’s almost entirely in the deep blue democrat run cities.
Example: Louisiana is the most dangerous state in the nation. 2x more likely to be murdered than the national average.
Take out New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, lake Charles and Alexandria. All democrat run city’s for decades.
Remove them and Louisiana is one of the safest.

I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS. I asked for her driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. The lady took out the required information and handed it to me. In with the cards I was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age) to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and ask if she had a weapon in her possession at this time.
She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box. Something — body language, or the way she said it — made me want to ask if she had any other firearms. She did admit to also having a 9mm Glock in her center console. Now I had to ask one more time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have just one more, a .38 special in her purse. I then asked her what was she so afraid of.
She looked me right in the eye and said, “Not a damn thing!”
That’s such a classic it’s had to beat. As it should be, I might add.

Why would anyone be afraid? Violent criminals are let go upon arrest (if they are arrested in the first place). And all of their friends like to watch the videos they make of their crimes. All thanks to President dementia and his merry band of leftists.

a 9mm in the drawer of your bed stand will make you feel a lot safer. I highly recommend it. Dont remember this being a huge issue in my youth 20-25 years ago. This is, unfortunately, an indication that US is no longer a nice place to live. There is no way to define the reasons and remain PC, but I think we all understand why this is happening.
Comes in really handy when you have a bad day and want to kill yourself or if your kids want to show how cool Dad’s gun is to their friends, shooting them in the process.
The only statistics that can be reliably tied to gun ownership are successful suicide and family firearms fatality.

I was born, raised and lived in southwest Atlanta for almost 40 years and I can tell you that NOWADAYS it is always wise to use your intuition & empathic perception when having to coexist around large populations of people (whose values may or may NOT be ANYTHING like yours). It is also smart to lower your own “radar cross-section” and open exposure as much as possible while going out and about for a routine recon out into typical socially-controlled mob occupied territories known as the blue zone metro areas. Look, I could really care less about the macho ego some guys have and how they think they are tough alpha-males blah, blah, blah… Just KNOW THIS, we ARE living in the end times and there is an increase in wickedness and its accompanied spiritual warfare everywhere- without a doubt. We are really living out the PRE tribulation times in Bible (Matthew 24).
Those who choose to live in ANY hell hole city, and virtually all are, will get exactly what they deserve. The cities are where ALL the insanity, lefties and evil reside.
All good advice. Atlanta is a rough place. Spent some time there with a friend who had a few screws loose. He was a cop and took us to some sketchy parts of town. I grew up in a city so I had my head on a swivel as you should.

Not mentioned in the article or comments was the breakdown of the responses from men and women.From reading the article,you would think everyone of a certain age would be afraid.No percentages were given as to how men responded vs. women who responded.There also were no breakdown of the responses by race.I think there is a gap here,so I will not seriously consider this study as legit.
To much screen time on dumb phones/computers is the root cause for anxiety. Screen time, phone time, computer time and TV viewing, has been negatively associated with the development of physical and cognitive abilities, and positively associated with obesity, sleep problems, depression and anxiety. Pills are not always the answer, perhaps putting down the stupid devices may help?
That’s what happens when you live in a cesspool like NYC. Meanwhile here in N.E. Florida where I LIVE we can walk the streets late at night in relative safety because most folks here are law abiding GOD fearing people (and most of us are CC so criminals never take that chance). So if you wanna be safe move to a red state AND leave your bad voting habits up north!

I live in one of the “fly over” states and, amazingly, I find no one in fear of their lives.
We fear we are losing our country to a bunch of self-serving elitist commies but November is coming.
When, oh when, will they conduct their surveys outside a metropolis and interview sane, intelligent, brave humans?
Growing up in a big city we always had some trepidation. You either learned to live by your wits or you stayed indoors all the time. It was the nature of the environment.
