Shock study: Quarter of children 6 and under own a smartphone

LONDON — How young is too young when it comes to owning a smartphone? Believe it or not, according to a new study, a quarter of children six and under actually own a mobile device.

Researchers with musicMagpie, a company that helps people declutter by selling their unwanted electronics online, conducted the study after they noted a 300% increase year-over-year in customers who were buying first-time phones for their children. A third of parents made the purchase simply because their kids asked, while one in five bought it to keep the little ones entertained.

How young is too young when it comes to owning a smartphone? Believe it or not, according to a new study, a quarter of children six and under actually own a mobile device.

Though the study didn’t indicate how many parents were surveyed, the results showed that most agreed 11 was the “ideal” age for children to receive their first smartphone. Nonetheless, the stunning findings showed 25% of parents purchased devices for children six and under. What’s worse, nearly half of those kids spent as much as 21 hours per week on the devices.

“The age at which children get their first phones, has got even younger, and while many agree that there’s no defined age to give a child a phone, there’s a lot parents can do to ensure their child’s day-to-day life isn’t consumed by one,” says musicMagpie spokesman Liam Howley in a press release.

Clearly, parents being more proactive with their children when it comes to screen time would be a good start for help. Eight in 10 parents surveyed said they don’t limit the amount of time their kids can use their smartphones.

“From restricting the time they spend on the device, to keeping a close eye on what they are downloading, there are many steps parents can go through to limit usage,” says Howley.

Another option would be to disable the data function, allowing kids to only used their phones to make calls or send texts. Just a quarter of parents take advantage of this feature, the study found.

  1. I have a neighbor who insists on having a smart phone for their 2 year old daughter. She barely talks. They say that it is so the toddler can watch videos using wifi. The 20 year old father is totally addicted to his phone and has a serious case of ADD. He is really hard to have a normal conversation with. He has his nose stuck in that phone constantly. Makes me wonder what the little girl will be like when she gets older. SMH

  2. Fine by me. My daughter will run mental circles around these functional idiots when she grows up.

  3. HOW MANY OF THESE ARE OWNED BY PEOPLE ON WELFARE AND WERE PAID FOR BY THE TAXPAYERS?

    1. Why is so-called diversity and mass immigration mandated for ALL white populations and ONLY white populations?

Is open borders the White ‘Privilege’?

Diversity is not demanded anywhere EXCEPT where white people are.

It’s code for removing white people ONLY. It’s Geno cide

      Its Anti White

      1. Yeah, why don’t we also look at the number of JEWS in certain positions and use the same diversity logic on them????

      2. Probably because you can’t prove us wrong? And that jailing people for dissenting against popular ideas would soon yield a world full of slaves like yourself. Condolences.

      3. You HAVE been proven wrong. The David Irving court case explored much of his so called “evidence” and was shown to have no basis in fact. He lost the case. He then appealed, and lost that too.

No doubt there have been other similar cases. You and your fellow low lifes can’t accept that you are wrong. You are driven by hatred. You’re pathetic.

      4. Hatred? Who is calling who names here because they have reached a different conclusion based on the evidence? Tell me: why would a death camp have a hospital?

      5. “…Tell me: why would a death camp have a hospital?..”.

Probably because this “hospital” was used to conduct medical experiments on LIVE prisoners. Much like Mengele did at Auschwitz.

Or sometimes the prisoners working were considered useful and worth keeping alive for a while if they had skills that were needed. Thus they had to keep the prisoners able to work as long as possible. Most of the German concentration camps were work camps, had abhorrent conditions and the population would get ill. If the powers that be deemed the person could get well and work some more, then they would get minimal medical treatment, rest, and extra food. Obviously, prisoners intended for immediate gassing weren’t sent to the hospital.

Also camp hygiene and disease maintenance were important for managing more than just the inmates, but also the camp staff and the communities that surrounded the camps.

One woman who survived reported being pregnant but not being sent to the gas chamber as expected. Instead she delivered a healthy baby. The Nazi doctors bound her breasts tightly, put her in a nice clean hospital bed and took notes over a period of days while she held her baby as it starved to death. These are the types of callous scum you’re defending, instead of respecting and honouring what the victims went through.

The Holocaust absolutely happened. There is clear evidence to show this. It has been thoroughly examined in courts of law and the evidence both for and against has been presented. The courts have ALL ruled in favour of the affirmative. Your Jew hating side lost, yet you continue dwelling on these conspiracy ideas. Get over it and do something useful with your life.

  4. Children don’t own anything, they are unable to engage in contracts. Their parents own the phone.

    1. Uhh, you do realize that a phone doesn’t have to be in a contract or have service in order to operate and still function with WiFi? Wow!

      1. Even a tracphone has a contract. So in end the end it is there parents phone, and their parents that pay the bill.

  5. I have 4 children, all at the same school and my youngest is in preschool. I don’t know ANY 6 or 7 yr olds at our school who have a smart phone. I do, however, see 10 yr olds with phones. Parents give them a phone with full access to the internet. No restrictions set up, what could go wrong???

  6. Are they the freebies? Seems that the evidence shows that these phones do not do justice to one’s brain even at older ages.

  7. Not a single one of them owns a smartphone! They may HAVE one, but their parent(s) own it!

    1. That was my very first thought, when I read the title. Maybe the little ones went to work to buy their own phone.

      1. Ruttro shaggy, Tysonstom, tightloops, Get a real job. Your links don’t work anyway.

  8. Creating a society that is unable to hold eye contact, read a written page, or hold a conversation. When a seven year old was pestering his out-to-lunch mother for a new iPhone recently, I bent down, looked the kid right in the eyes and said “Phones melt your brain.” She stood there in stunned silence, and so did he. I do not care anymore. I am sick of the mass destruction to polite society of these ridiculous devices. They do nothing other than stress people out and cause car accidents.

  9. “Though the study didn’t indicate how many parents were surveyed”. Enough said, anyone putting any thought into this article, are the same who fell for Russia propaganda in the last election.

How could any respectable journalist put out an entire article without knowing the scientific method used for its authenticity?

Three people near me said their kids never had cell phones until they paid for them themselves. So 100% of the people near me, who had kids, only had children with phones not paid for by parents. FAKE NEWS! SAME THE REPORTER AND THE OUTLET!!

  10. Times change. Will parents permit and teach their kids to use phones wisely?–The ones of the future successful will.

  11. Well lets be real. A child 6 and under doesnt really ‘own’ anything. In any case, agreed most parents are simply normies so they’re being lazy. We use them as teaching tools to learn how to navigate the web, social dangers, what to do and not to do. It would be bad parenting to let them go till 18 and then give them these destructive devices.

  12. Parents are willingly hooking their kids brains directly into the global communist propaganda machine.

  13. Giving young children electronics damages their brains. Research is just now producing the results. Do give them this stuff! IT IS NOT A BABYSITTER……BE AN ENGAGED PARENT!

  14. My child got hers at 8. It’s a useful tool, and beneficial to have in case of emergencies.

This is also why the current generation of handheld game consoles have sales less than half that of the Gameboy despite a massive increase in the gaming population.

Stop trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

    1. You now have a child that cannot truly read, write a sentence, engage in a dialogue or think out of the box. You have an internet zombie that could be taken by a pedophile. Be proud….i think you are a moron!

      1. I’ll be sure to tell her after she’s done writing a protest letter to Nintendo about their handling of copyright law. It’s cute watching her try to work through the fair use doctrine.

Oh, and you are a fool, but I think you already knew that.

    2. I can tell you with a degree of certainty that your daughter will grow up with a head full of mush. Not even up for debate. Is it worth the “case of emergencies”? We got along fine without them when we were kids, even during emergencies.

      1. Well, one thing is that I taught her about different parenting styles and how you should not judge others, since out of the billions of people in the world, the vast majority were raised differently than you and turned out just fine.

So, she’s already one step up on a self-proclaimed doctor.

      2. Just fine. Not exactly what I see, but hey, if it’s good enough for you.

  15. How many own guns?.

If a child can ‘own’ a smartphone, can they not ‘own’ a gun given by the parents just the same as the phone?
