StudyFinds’ “Best of the Best” articles are put together with the idea of taking the work out of common consumer research. Ever find yourself searching for a product or service on Google and reading multiple reviews to find items listed across many of them? Our Best of the Best lists are created with that process in mind, with each item ranked by how frequently it appears on expert reviews or lists. With Best of the Best, you are getting consensus picks — making them truly the best of the best!

1. The Beatles

Would anyone else take the number one spot? The Beatles are more than just a rock band. They are history itself. Master songwriters, performers, and icons. They are the epitome of music. Plus, all of their top songs are still played today.

Each member of The Beatles was special, “With voices like John Lennon and Paul McCartney, The Beatles captured the heart of many, but wouldn’t have been able to do so had it not been for the presence of the equally-renowned George Harrison and Ringo Starr, two of the best instrumentalists who knew exactly what to do to bring out the best in the voices of Lennon and McCartney,” notes Guitar Junky

Really Simple Guitar followed with this sentiment, “These four guys and the people in their orbits have been associated with more legendary stories than number-one records. But, the fact that 8 of their 20 number 1 hits came after they stopped touring is impressive.”

They are a group that spurned more music from others. How? “The Beatles are globally recognized and are credited with inspiring many famous musicians to pursue music. The most influential band of all time,” says Music Grotto

2. The Rolling Stones

If the world forgot about the Beatles, The Rolling Stones would easily slide into the number one spot. A rock band from England that never let age, or anything else, define them.

Even now, they’re still going, “The fact that they remain one of the highest grossing concerts draws in existence, even with their members now well past the age of collecting social security checks, is a testament to more than just will power,” says Music Influence

“The Rolling Stones were hailed as the greatest rock and roll band in the world in the 1970s, a title they have battled other famous bands to keep. Having sold over 200 million records worldwide, the band is one of the best-selling bands of all time,” mentions Hello Music Theory

“Their countercultural symbolism, raunchy lyrics and killer musicianship have made them one of the most enduring acts ever,” adds Parade.

3. Queen

The British rock group from London led by the enigmatic Freddie Mercury takes the number three spot on this list. These stadium jams will never be forgotten, and they will rock you.

Freddie was a legend at the front of the group, “Freddie Mercury is probably the best singer of all time. His vocals are the perfect blend of operatic and rocking, and when it comes to his command of the stage and the crowd, well, nobody did it better,” says Guitar Lobby

There wasn’t a genre they wouldn’t touch as Dig writes, “Though broadly a classic rock band, Queen made forays into disco, funk, and classic pop without ever sacrificing their identity, and they remained a phenomenal live act until they effectively ceased touring in 1986.”

Simply, “Queen reinvented music. There is no other way to put it,” adds The Top Tens

4. Led Zeppelin

Plant, Page, Jones, and Bonham – names almost as famous as the four Beatles – formed the English rock group Led Zeppelin in 1968 and made their mark on music forever.

As Today puts it, “Over a 10-year, nine-album career from 1969-79, Led Zeppelin was the most popular rock group in the world, ultimately selling more than 50 million records in the U.S. alone.”

They emphasized the larger-than-life persona of rock stars, “No band ever has had such a fanatical following, not even The Beatles. There was so much mystique, so many myths and anecdotes surrounding the band that they almost seemed like they were from another planet,” says Guitar Lobby

Dig writes, “when it comes to rock on the most grandiose scale, no band has ever flown quite as high as Led Zeppelin.”

5. Pink Floyd

Our all-English rock band list comes to a close with the kings of psychedelic rock music. Hello Music Theory says, “With their music, they became deeply inspirational to other rising artists. The band drew in an audience from the psychedelic music scene, composing music for elaborately planned live performances.”

They were trendsetters of their genre, “One of the pioneers and most influential bands on ambient music, also commonly known as ‘psychedelic’ music, Pink Floyd remains as one of the greatest rock bands the 20th century has given us,” adds Guitar Junky.

“Known for their lengthy compositions, Pink Floyd’s songbook is unusual, trippy, and often philosophical. The band’s most famous album ‘The Wall’ depicts images of a woebegone rock star; the album is purported to be autobiographical,” writes Music Grotto.

  1. Yeah, I know these articles are just clickbait, but I have two words (only six letters) for the author:

    The
    Who

  2. Queen. No, no, no, no, no, no. Great band. Significant. Talented at all positions but #3 of all time. No. C’mon.

      1. Wrong!

Why do you often wrongly refer to The Beatles as a ”pop” band and not the mostly great very diverse rock and roll, pop rock, and rock band that they always were? As a guy so rightly said,The Beatles were a rock band not ABBA,exactly or The Carpenters etc. Back around 2003 in one of those stupid The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones discussions someone ignorantly said The Beatles were a pop band and The Rolling Stones were a rock band, and a sensible guy said he was sick and tired of this cr*p calling The Beatles a pop band and The Rolling Stones a rock band, and he very rightly said so all of the great rock songs The Beatles wrote and played were just pretend right? It’s ironic in some way that Paul McCartney said in a 1994 interview that Mick Jagger came to John and Paul in 1963 and asked him if they had any songs for them.

So Paul and John wrote the rock n roll song, I Wanna Be Your Man right in front of them, and in Bob Spitz’s very good book,The Beatles he explains that as they were writing it John played Keith Richards guitar and Paul played Bill Wyman’s bass and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger who were really impressed that they could just write a song just like that to order, and it became one of The Rolling Stones first hits, and it motivated them to start writing their own songs and both bands became friends from then on The Rolling Stones also wrote and played more than a few songs that could be called ”pop” songs too.

The Rolling Stones also wrote quite a few soft sentimental pop kind of songs,Lady Jane,As Tears Go By,Ruby Tuesday,Angie,Wild Horses,Waiting On A Friend,Happy etc and the 2 dreadful disco imitations,Miss You and Emotional Rescue.

At least when Paul McCartney did a disco like song,Good Night tonight it was good interesting sounding music. I do really like some Rolling Stones songs though, but the songs I like the radio rarely ever play, like street Fighting Man,Monkey Man,Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,Heart of Stone which I think is one of their best early songs,Let It Bleed and Happy which is a good but not great pop rock song.

The All Music Guide The Beatles are classified in the genre Pop/Rock, so are The Rolling Stones, Their description of styles of The Beatles first album,Please Please Me, And their description of the styles on The Rolling Stones first album,The Rolling Stones (England’s Newest Hit Makers) is really similar.

Both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are both described as Rock & Roll, early Pop/Rock,Contemporary Pop/Rock Their description of the styles of The Beatles Sgt.Pepper’s album,British Psychedelia,Contemporary Pop/Rock,Psychedelic Garage,Rock & Roll,Baroque Pop,AM Pop,and Hard Rock.

The Rolling Stones 1966 album Aftermath and their 1967 album Flowers has these descriptions too. Their description of the styles of The Rolling Stones Their Satanic Majesties Request, British Psychedelia,Contemporary Pop/Rock,Psychedelic Pop,Psychedelic Garage, The All Music Guide’s description of the styles of The Beatles 1968 White Album, Hard Rock is one of them Their description of the styles of The Rolling Stones 1968 album,Beggars Banquet Hard Rock isn’t one of them.

      2. The Beach Boys were mostly a pop band I have never heard anything rocking from them.Even fans of theirs mention how their 1976 cover (when recording technology was better than in 1964 when The Beatles recorded their version) have said how un rocking and slow their version is,The Beatles version is fast and rocking which is fitting for the name of the song.

And even the early Beatles songs like She Loves You,I Saw Her Standing There,You Can’t Do That,Can’t Buy Me Love etc sound like hard rock compared to what was on the radio in 1963.Bobby Vinton,The Four Seasons,Bobby Darren and The Beach Boys teen beach surfing hits.

      3. Why do people often wrongly refer to The Beatles as a ”pop” band and not the mostly great very diverse rock and roll, pop rock, and rock band that they always were? 4. Most rock critics, most people and countless famous successful bands and musicians have rightfully called and still call The Beatles the greatest rock band and or band in general including Ozzy Osbourne who has been a huge Beatles fan since he heard their great rock and roll song She Loves You in 1963 at the age of 15 on his transistor radio and he says he thought what the f***k was that? And he became obsessed with them and they motivated him to go into music,he has called them the ggreatest band to walk the earth.

In an interview with Pink Floyd’s ( who I never liked) David Gilmore who says he wished he had been in The Beatles and that he learned everything from them, to play bass, and lead guitar and rhythm from them and that they were fantastic

    1. any list without the Grateful Dead, Jefferson airplane and the rest of the San Francisco sound is incomplete. Having multiple hits shouldn’t be a standard, but rather fan support and spin off bands. Album sales are still strong regarding the dead, dead and Co, Jerry garcia band, Garcia- Grissom.
      An incomplete list

      1. In a just world, the Rock and roll Hall of Fame would be in the Bay area. Okay maybe London, New York and LA would be in the running also, but Cleveland?? I know Ohio is like the geographical center of the US population or some shit, but that’s beside the point. Now Jefferson airplane and grateful Dead in the top 5? That might be a bit of a stretch

    1. I am more interested in seeing what folks think about. 6-7-8-9-10. For me! I have to pick not only my chioces but who had a major influence in the music world. And i don’t care what number they are. Only if they are in the top 10. Doors, Metelica, Black Sabbeth, Eagles, and Gratful Dead! Sorry! I can hear some yelling at me. Also Beach Boys belong on that list!

      1. No most rock critics, most people, many polls of 1000 people, and countless famous successful musicians have rightly called and still call The Beatles The Greatet rock band,or band in general even over their own bands!

      1. On acclaimedmusic.net which ranks music artists based on how much critical acclaim their music has received by all different music critics from decades,The Beatles are ranked # 1.The only Queen songs that I have heard that are just good not great is Killer Queen and Your My Best Friend, I can’t stand We will Rock You,We Are The Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody they are so annoying and obnoxious.

Queen is appropriately rated # 85.

As The 1992 Rolling Stone Album Guide who gave every Queen album only 2 and 3 stars, only their Greatest Hits they gave a 3 and half to,they accurately described Queen as having bombastic schlock rock hits and said even their Greatest Hits sound dated.

The very good Russian music reviewer George Starostin gave Queen only a C rating

http://starling.rinet.ru/music/queen.htm (and that’s way too high!) but he,like almost all music critics and reviewers gave The Beatles an A and he only gave them the highest number a 5,and he wrote in bold letters and underlined,*The Highest Rating Ever*

Stephen Thomas Erlewine who wrote The All Music Guide’s Rolling Stones biography, also said in the original All Music Guide Queen review how bombastic and campy Queen were and that despite their being second to The Beatles in popularity, they were never taken seriously by the music critics.

Brian May of Queen says I mean I’m the biggest Beatles fan on earth, I mean I would have voted for all of The Beatles songs he was referring to a music poll.

Brian May says The Beatles were Queen’s bible.

In a discussion some years ago on the SH Forums,Queen Songs You Can’t Stand,Duophonic rightly says,All,and 12 members liked his comment. He’s a Beatles fan though.

In this discussion,Why Do So Many Famous Artists Like Queen, member stanlove so rightfully said,He hates Mercury’s voice, that’s a big part of the problem. Then he said When he was listening to Chuck Berry,The Beatles,The Stones,or Dylan,he wasn’t thinking, boy you know what rock and roll needs? A band big on theatrics with a lead singer trying to mesh in opera with rock,he then said,That’s exactly why they are crap IMO,if you want to sing or listen to opera, then go to the opera.

      2. In an interview with Pink Floyd’s ( who I never liked) David Gilmore who says he wished he had been in The Beatles and that he learned everything from them, to play bass, and lead guitar and rhythm from them and that they were fantastic

  3. Wasn’t Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd’s most famous album? Obviously The Wall was amazing, but it couldn’t come close to Dark Side.

    1. The wall is probably more famous. Since the movie and several plays that were made. DSOTM is probably liked more by Floyd fans and may have sold more.

  4. Beatles, Zep,Stones then gee,A-Z,I don’t even like some but: Beach Boys,Chicago,Deep Purple, Eagles,Genesis,Queen,TomPetty+Heartbreakers,Queen,Rainbow,Steely Dan,U2,Who,Yes,Rush,Yes.Black Sabbath,Eric Clapton in any form.Heart,Doors. Love, hate, laugh idk.

  5. The Grateful Dead has had a much bigger impact on music than all of these bands combined… Musically, technically, and culturally.

And the pinnacle of Rock n roll is the live show and no one does it better than the good ol Grateful Dead. On any give weekend in most cities across America, there’s a GD cover band jamming away.

The Steal Your Face logo is the most recognizable and “What a long strange trip it’s been” is the most often quoted line from any song.

The GD also invented a lot of new technology through the drive to perfect the sounds of live music recording. They invented split mic technology and variable speed recording, things Floyd used to record Dark Side of Moon. The GD recorded Live Dead on 16 track before anyone else.

They created the Americana, and jamband genres.

To this day, the Wall of Sound is the greatest live concert pa system ever invented.,

      1. I think a lot of people are going for quantity over quality, which is why the writer of the article put Beatles as #1 here. Are you asserting quantity is better?

        I doubt the claim that
“What a long strange trip it’s been” is reallty the most often quoted line from any song.

      2. No The Beatles had an amazing amount of both quantity and quality music The Beatles wrote and played 50 years worth of mostly great ( and what wasn’t great was still good) popular, critically acclaimed, diverse music in only an amazing 8 year recording career and no other band or solo artist has ever done this before, during or since. And they wrote countless great rock n roll, rock and even some hard rock, but they didn’t just write rock music because they were so creative and diverse, they wrote all types of great music even though they were primarily a great *rock band*.

Their music is also the most covered of all time by every type of music artists,Motown, jazz, classical, pop, rock, and even heavy metal with the 2006 heavy metal Beatles tribute album,Butchering The Beatles:A Headbashing Tribute produced by grammy award winning producer guitarist and guitar player in the group kiss,Bob Kulick featuring many hard rock and heavy metal musicians including big Beatles fan Lemmy from Motorhead etc

    1. Ehhhhhh can’t agree with you on that one. Didn’t you ever hear that joke “what did the Dead Head say when he sobered up? He said ‘what is this crap we are listening to’?” JOKE!!!! I like the Dead but over The Beatles and Zeppelin? Not even close.

  6. Clearly Bias here, all British bands.
How bout The Beach Boys, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Poco, & The Jefferson Airplane?

    1. The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, or Poco? Those are not even nearly in the same category as they 5 in this list. The Beach Boys had a pretty great run, Jefferson Airplane had some great songs, but not the impact of the others.

      1. Poco was a great band, think even they came from buff springfield, why would anyone call anyone a loser cuz they disagree with choices.
The Beatles did something that had never been done and everybody copied they created a record that can’t be replicated on stage. Multi layered music. The greatest two bands that list more offshoots would be th yardbirds and buffalo springfield.
But it all comes down to taste, and you need to experience the music preferably when it was made

  7. Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd – YES but Queen?? You’re kidding, right?
Hendrix, the Who, Grateful Dead, CSN&Y would all rate much higher than Queen.

    1. Queen? reallllly? Oh hell no.
      Beatles
      Rolling Stones
      The Doors
      Led Zeppelin
      Steely Dan

      -OR-

      Beatles
      Rolling Stones
      Grateful Dead
      Lead Zeppelin
      steely Dan.

      Queen……Really????????!!!!!

    2. Queen has done a lot of spectacular songs, while The Beatles and Rolling Stones did mostly mediocre songs. It’s quality vs quantity. Queen isn’t on my top bands list, but I can’t imagine any other band doing the epic songs for Highlander.

      1. I’m not a particularly big fan of the Stones, and I think the Beatles were too pop to even be on this list, but to call their songwriting mediocre in comparison to Queen? You must be trolling, right? 😂

    1. Stones,
      Beatles,
      Zeppelin,
      CCR,
      Beach Boys,
      Cream(Clapton),
      Fleetwood Mac,
      Journey,
      Kink,
      Animals.

    1. Stones
      Beatles
      Zeppelin
      CCR
      Beach Boys
      Cream(Clapton)
      Fleetwood. Mac
      Journey
      Jefferson Airplane
      Animals

  8. Queen is the questionable one for me.
Boston no too short a time at the top
    Hendrix probably makes more sense
Doors you could make a case
Beach Boys nah really pop music. At that point might as well take Micheal Jackson
Metallica not quite but like Sabbath so influential. Both close.
    Eagles another close one.
Bowie a little out there probably not any where near Queen if your going in that direction
The Who would be my sub for Queen

    1. I love Queen,Freddie Mercury was a phenom.Brian May is a killer guitar player. My list of the top three are Zeppelin,The Stones and Queen.

    2. I would have put Queen number one. Why all the haters? They are STILL selling albums and I’m willing to bet the haters haven’t experienced the Queen catalog in it’s entirety.

  9. Not a bad list. They are all somewhat legendary bands. But Beatles as #1, really? Why not just label your article as “another cliche list”? Nothing against The Beatles, but they didn’t do anything spectacular to earn that spot. There’s so many others that are overlooked. Ozzy & Black Sabbath creating heavy metal. The Doors with poetic (& somewhat psychedelic) rock. Jimi Hendrix & Eric Clapton who are both regarded as great guitar players. But keep marking for the bug band if you like.

    1. The Beatles? Broke new ground but only lasted seven years. Their status has been totally overhyped. How can that compare to a band that has been filling stadia for over 60 years? Stones unrivalled at number one!

      1. Ken who runs cool very good The Rolling Stones, John Lennon and Ken Classic Rock n Roll sites says in his great 2017 review of The Beatles first album Please Please Me, that they were different from any other bands and music artists before them because they wrote, sang and played their own songs and before them music groups had professional song writers writing songs for them.

He said John and Paul not only wrote great songs on Please Please Me, but that John and Paul were both great lead singers who couldn’t be beat at the time, and that they were on their way to becoming the greatest rock and roll band ever.

He also said that the album had rock and pop songs and that it starts with Paul’s I Saw Her Standing There which he calls pure rock and roll, and he said John’s vocal on Twist And Shout,(which John sang so great with a bad sore throat from a bad cold) was hard rock before any hard rock was being done.

Here is also his great 2017 review of With The Beatles,

      2.
