7 Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Places To Live In The US, Ranked

While the United States has made significant strides in LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance over the years, the need for safe spaces, and in this case, safe communities, is still of utmost importance. There are still many places in the U.S. that are not as welcoming, which highlights the importance of having havens for the LGBTQ+ community. These places not only provide a safe and inclusive environment but also offer a vibrant and thriving LGBTQ+ culture. Today, we will take the time to celebrate some of the most LGBTQ+-friendly places to live in the U.S., highlighting the factors that make them stand out and sharing them with you in the hopes that you can find an accepting and loving community. By sharing these places, we hope to encourage the creation of more inclusive communities and inspire individuals from all walks of life to offer safety, community, and love to their neighbors.

Considering a majority of Americans overestimate the size of the gay population, they are thus more likely to oppose equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals. A recent survey shows that most Americans believe that a whopping 23 percent of the population identified as queer, which is an inaccurate inflation. These misguided perceptions highlight the urgent need for safe spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can freely express their identity without fear of discrimination or judgment.

While, at many times, it feels like a scary world to live in, there is a light at the end of the tunnel; you just have to find it. Hopefully, we can help you discover a community that feels like home as we at StudyFinds have taken the time to research across eight expert sources to bring you today’s ranking of the most LGBTQ+-friendly places to live in the U.S. Disagree with our list or feel we missed out on a safe suggestion? No worries. We would love to hear from you in the comments below. Now, onto the list!

Of course, San Francisco was going to be at the top of our list. “Was there ever any doubt?” asks Advocate. The city took the top spot on almost every ranking, thus earning its coveted place at number one. Known as the Gay Capital of the World, San Francisco continues to attract LGBTQ+ individuals from all over with its vibrant and inclusive community. The city’s rich history of activism and its numerous LGBTQ+ landmarks, such as the iconic Castro District, make it an ideal destination for those seeking acceptance and celebration of their identities.

San Francisco serves as a hub for the LGBTQ+ community and has several must-see locations. My Transgender Cupid mentions their vast selection of gay bars and clubs, such as The Stud or The Edge, that provide hopping spots for the community to have a blast. Moreover, San Francisco hosts the annual Pride Parade and Festival, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world to celebrate love, diversity, and equality.

The knowledge that equality, community support, and health care access rank among the highest in the U.S., according to Moving Waldo. This is incredibly reassuring when thinking about relocating to San Francisco as a member of the queer community. These factors highlight the progressive and inclusive nature of the city, making it an attractive destination for individuals seeking a welcoming and accepting community.

2. New York City, New York

Next up is the Big Apple itself, New York City. According to Hotels.com, “New York City is home to more than 270,000 self-identifying gay and bisexual individuals, as well as over 50,000 transgender people.” New York City has long been known as a hub for LGBTQ+ culture and activism, with a vibrant community that has played a significant role in shaping the city’s identity. The city’s neighborhoods, such as Chelsea and Greenwich Village, have become iconic landmarks for LGBTQ+ individuals and have fostered a sense of inclusivity and acceptance.

New York City is also home to many anti-discrimination laws that include sexual orientation and gender identity, adds Cuddly Nest. These laws protect individuals from being discriminated against based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in various aspects of life, including employment, housing, and public accommodations. These progressive measures have made New York City a safe and inclusive place for members of the LGBTQ+ community, fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and promotes equality.

New York City is also rich in its LGBTQ+ history. The Stonewall Inn, for instance, where the 1969 Stonewall Riots occurred, stands as a symbol for the beginning of gay liberation, as mentioned in Inside Our Suitcase. The riots that took place at this establishment were a pivotal moment in history, igniting a movement for equal rights and acceptance. Today, the Stonewall Inn serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the queer community, inspiring generations to continue the fight for equality.

The number three spot on our list goes to Portland, Oregon. One of the most gay-friendly cities in the nation, “a full eight percent of the population identifies as LGBTQ+, the largest in the country,” states Advocate. Portland is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community and progressive attitudes toward diversity and inclusivity.

The inclusive atmosphere and thriving cultural scene offer a welcoming and inclusive space for the community to express themselves and find joy in their identity.

Portland’s queer culture doesn’t just stop with entertainment. Portland was the first major city to elect a gay mayor by the name of Sam Adams in 2008, according to Moving Waldo. Additionally, Portland is home to numerous LGBTQ+ support groups, community centers, and health clinics, providing resources and services specifically tailored to the queer community. These support groups and community centers play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and providing a safe space for queer individuals to connect and find support.

The city is known for its progressive policies and strong LGBTQ+ community, with many resources and support systems in place. Denver also hosts numerous pride events and festivals throughout the year, further solidifying its reputation as an inclusive and welcoming city for all.

The city also provides many community centers that are more than inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals. These community centers not only offer a safe space for individuals, but they also foster a sense of belonging and provide opportunities for personal growth and development. Whether it’s through creative expression, physical activities, or social engagement, these inclusive programs cater to the diverse needs and interests of everyone in the LGBTQ+ community.

  1. Surveys are not peer reviewed scientific studies. This website has taken a relatively sharp turn to far left politics at the expense of actual science. Keep it up and your readership will devolve to a considerably lower level of scientific literacy and perhaps IQ. Either way, I’m on the verge of waling away from this site. Note: I am a recently retired and relatively young mechanical design engineer who holds three patents and has been published in a host of national magazines.

    1. I had hopes for this site when it first began. Since then, it has devolved into a left wing propaganda website….sprinkled with ‘lists’ in between the ‘studies’ that attempt to legitimize climate change, emasculation of males and eating bugs as a protein alternative.

I highly doubt there will ever be a ‘7 conservative friendly cities’ published.

  2. I think it’s important to remember that there are many different kinds of people in this country, and many of them don’t feel safe due to attitudes like yours.
    1. Climate change is legitimate and you are an uneducated clown.
    2. Males are emasculating themselves with all their whining and crying about being left out and left behind due to their primitive ideals. See: your comment above.
    3. Bugs are cool. Alternative proteins are cool. Cry me a river.

“Conservatives” are safe every single place in this country. Y’all made damn sure of that a hundred years ago.
Lighten up, read a book, and try being nicer to people who are different than you. It’s not hard I promise.
