The List: Best Electric Can Openers, According to Culinary Experts

1. Hamilton Beach Can Opener

Number one on our list is the Hamilton Beach Can Opener, sure to be found in kitchen cabinets everywhere. “There are so many perks to this electric model, but here’s the biggest: It eliminates sharp lid edges by cutting along the sides, creating a smooth surface rather than jagged edges. The strong 165-watt motor can handle those giant, versatile cans of tomatoes just as well as it pops open a tiny can of cat food. No jagged edges mean no bandages, no ruined manicures (it works on pop-tops cans, too), and no ruined utensils,” shares The Kitchn.

“Open cans smoothly and easily with the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener. An easy pushdown lever makes quick work of removing both pop-top and regular cans. Unlike most can openers, the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener is designed so the blade cuts along the side and not into the top of the can. This minimizes the blade’s contact with food and prevents splashing or seeping out from the top since the can remains closed until you lift the lid. The result is a mess-free, smooth cut that allows you to remove the top without worrying about sharp edges along the lid,” writes Wayfair.

These gadgets bring a sense of comfort and ease to the heart of your home. “This Hamilton Beach Electric Can Opener has a lever which encloses a short blade and a magnet that grips onto the top of the can. It is also dishwasher safe,” adds Clos Kitchen. “The body has a pin that guides the can along with a small roulette that rotates the can. The back of this Hamilton Beach opener has two extra features. One is a small lower compartment where you can store the power cord when you are not using the can opener. The second feature is a small knife sharpener. To open my can I first had to attach the magnet on top of the can. Then I pulled the lever down which brought down the blade onto the edge of the can. The can opener slowly cuts open the can while rotating it at the same time.”

2. Cuisinart Deluxe Can Opener

Number two on our list is the Cuisinart. “The Cuisinart Deluxe Can Opener is ready to go right out of the box. All of the pieces are already in place and all I had to do to get it going was plug it into the wall and set up a can that needed opening. Easy, peasy. It’s a bit bulky though, and takes up a decent amount of counter space for a can opener,” says The Spruce Eats.

Say goodbye to struggles and hello to easy, cozy cooking moments. “Our clear winner was the easy-to-use Cuisinart Deluxe Electric Can Opener, which scored higher across the board than nearly all other electric and handheld models we tested. The Cuisinart easily attached to the can and cut through the metal of every can we gave it. It even managed to stay upright while latched onto a 48-ounce can of chicken broth. Some will say it’s physics, but I think it might be magic,” says USA Today.

Electric can openers save time, leaving more room for family and relaxation. “Cuisinart’s stainless steel electric can opener has a sleek design, so it looks a bit more high-end if you want to leave it on your kitchen counter. It also has a sturdy, wide base and rubber feet to keep it stable during use. During our tests, the magnet held cans up to 32 ounces in place without help, and the one-touch auto shut-off feature worked well,” raves Good Housekeeping.

3. Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener

The Kitchen Mama is a model that’s definitely worth checking out. “Kitchen Mama also has a one-touch electric can opener that automatically stops when it completes a full turn around the can. And while that sounds like a nice addition in theory, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything with this model. It was easy enough to press the button again when I wanted the can opener to turn off,” writes The Spruce Eats.

Cheers to no more struggling and more celebrating in the kitchen! “It says ‘Yes You Can’ right on the pink box, and, well, yes, it can. The Kitchen Mama Electric is a surprising standout. Out of the box, its fun pop offers something different from the otherwise modest-looking competition. After taking a few moments to determine exactly how to place the compact electric opener on the can, attaching it becomes effortless. The single button that operates the Kitchen Mama is easy to press and securely locks to the lid’s edge for hands-free operation. Once the opener makes a complete rotation, pressing the button stops the opener and detaches it from the lid. The result is a smooth lid and can, with no food product left on the opener. Even the smallest cans did not cause any issues for the Kitchen Mama,” shares Tech Gear Lab.

Are you looking for a splash of color to liven up your kitchen? “With lots of colors to choose from, there’s no doubt that the Kitchen Mama electric can opener is a cool-looking gadget. Better yet, it comes at a pretty good price. Lightweight and battery operated, this electric can opener is especially portable, making it a great addition to both your kitchen arsenal and your camping supplies. Just tap to start, and the opener travels along the 360-degree edge to open cans in a flash. Once finished, tap the device again to stop, and the magnet will hold onto the lid so you won’t have to worry about it getting lost inside the can,” shares USA Today.

4. Oster Can Opener

Another reliable model is this one from Oster. “With its stainless-steel finish, this Oster looks more stylish and expensive than most of the competition. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the build quality to back that up. While the Oster is the only other product stable and tall enough to handle a 48-ounce can without tipping, its many plastic elements that fix the magnet and cutting blade to the opener’s base look flimsy and likely to break, a theory that is supported by many of the product’s Amazon reviews,” writes USA Today.

The satisfaction of a smooth and safe can-opening experience is hard to beat. “This Oster model has a wide base with a protruding foot to help prevent tipping. It also includes a built-in bottle opener and knife sharpener. The retractable cord keeper — designed to work with just the push of a button — is handy for storage, but it didn’t work seamlessly every time in our tests. The lever was easy to attach to the body of the opener and remove for thorough cleaning. It has an auto shut-off feature and left no spills when we opened cans,” shares Good Housekeeping.

Say goodbye to can-opening struggles with oversized cans. “While most electric can openers can handle regular soup and vegetable cans, the large economy size and taller cans are a problem. The Oster Tall Can Opener works great with these taller and/or larger cans. It grips onto the edge of the can easily and cuts around cleanly. The sleek design is easy to wipe off if can contents splatter onto the opener. The lever/cutter easily removes for cleaning and is easily reattached,” shares Viewpoints.

5. Handy Can Opener

Next up is the aptly named Handy Can Opener. “I tested the Handy Can Opener—a hands-free automatic can opener that promises an open can, with no sharp edges, in seconds,” writes The Spruce Eats. “This can opener has one speed that’s controlled by a single button, so even without reading the instructions, you’ll likely be able to figure out how to use it right out of the box. A few standouts though: There’s a magnetic grip in the center that helps keep it in place while it ‘walks’ around the can, and a manual release button that allows you to remove the can opener from the can if it jams or the batteries happen to die mid-cut.”

Once you’ve got that trusty electric can opener in your kitchen arsenal, you’ll be on cloud nine. “The handy can opener can open a can in around 15 seconds and leaves no sharp edges so there is no worrying about cutting yourself. As an added bonus, after the cans have been opened you can peel the label off and use them for storage because of the fact that there are no edges. As an added bonus, the handy can opener comes in 4 colors,” shares As Seen on TV.

It’s great when you can unleash the inner chef in you without the can-opening drama. “Handy Can Opener is an electric can opener that works with a single touch,” notes Freakin Reviews. “You simply place it on the can of your choice, press the button, and all the work is done for you.”

6. Black+Decker Can Opener

Trusty number six on our list is from Black+Decker. “The Black+Decker EasyCut can opener performed well in our tests, especially considering the affordable price. While the unit felt lighter in weight than competitors, its magnet was able to hold 32-ounce cans, and testers noted that the auto shut-off feature was reliable. One drawback is the bulky nature of the lever, which made it hard to see the blade when attaching the can. But our tester thought it earned its place on your counter as a one-stop shop for multiple kitchen tasks: A removable multitool lives onboard which can be used to remove bottle caps and open pop-tops. There’s also a knife sharpener built into the back of the unit,” writes Good Housekeeping.

Families, foodies, and everyone in between – get ready for some seriously gleeful kitchen adventures with this easy-to-use electric can opener. “You can use this budget-friendly countertop can opener on cans up to 32 ounces in weight. This is a magnet-operated, one-touch machine that operates quickly and leaves behind smooth lids. With a wide base that’s specifically tailored to allow for larger can widths, this machine is a great value for the price,” says Simply Recipes. “Using the Black+Decker can be a little less streamlined than some of the other openers on the market. During our tests, if the magnet and can lid weren’t properly aligned, the blade did not cut the top. But, when lined up correctly, the top-cutting machine yielded a smooth lid, and the magnet held the sliced lid from falling into the can.”

What other super powers does this electric can opener have? “Our best multipurpose electric can opener is the BLACK+DECKER Space Maker Multi-Purpose Can Opener which stands at 6 by 7 inches and is a total space saver in the kitchen for its design. This totally useful electric can opener can open up cans and also bottles due to its bottle opener. And as an additional feature, the knife sharpener will be handy for any dull situation to prevent injuries when cutting food. What’s more, another unique thing about this electric can opener is the fact that it also comes with a bag cutter for food prep purposes,” adds Jen Reviews.

7. Sharper Image One Touch Can Opener

Number seven on our list is the golden ticket! “Helpful for anyone with limited hand mobility or arthritic hands, this single-touch can opener is safe and easy to use. We especially like the size of this pick—it’s small enough to easily fit into a kitchen drawer but not so small that it feels flimsy. To use this handheld kitchen gadget, simply place the opener on top of the can with the rim positioned in the groove between the cutter and the drive wheel. There’s a bit of a learning curve in positioning it correctly, but once you get it, it’s the same for all cans. Press the button for one second and release it—the opener will begin to work. Once the cutting is done, push the button again to stop the opener. A magnet on the opener will easily remove the can’s lid,” writes BHG.

Who doesn’t love a mess-free kitchen? “We appreciated that it safe-cut the lid and the magnet held onto it after it finished cutting, so there wasn’t any counter mess to clean up,” shares Consumer Reports.

“Just place it on top of a can, push the button and stand back. The hidden blade slides out from underneath and cuts off the top of the can, just below the lid. Granted, placing a container of Alpo in this gadget is a little tricky and it’s not the fastest can opener in history. But, when it’s finished it holds onto the lid so you can slide it into the recycling bin,” notes Wired.

  1. I’m always surprised when I see this type of list. I have owned dogs all my life and most on the list. I have to wonder why dalmatians are never on the list. These dogs were called carriage dogs because they ran along with the carriage to protect them. I was lucky enough to own a dalmatian and she was the most loyal and protective dog ever
