Best Spirituality Books: Top 5 Reads Most Recommended By Experts

Spirituality means different things to different people, but it’s generally thought of as getting or being, in touch with deeper aspects of human existence. It’s living in a way that focuses not on material things but rather on living in harmony with nature and in tune with your being. Whether spirituality is new to you or it’s your way of life, the best spirituality books are fascinating titles that may be of interest, which is why we compiled this list below.

If you’ve chosen the spiritual path, you’ll be happy to know you’re setting yourself up for a healthier and longer life. In a recent study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, scientists report that spirituality helps in reference to both serious illness and overall health. The panel concluded that for a generally healthy person, spiritual community participation (attending religious services, for example) is linked to a healthier life, greater longevity, better mental health, and less substance use. In response to these findings, study authors believe spirituality should be more universally accounted for across health care settings.

And for more good news about spirituality, if you feel you are “spiritually fulfilled,” you are more likely to believe that you’re in control of your happiness, thus not pointing fingers and feeling the world is out to get you. In a recent study, researchers surveyed 2,000 Americans, with 74 percent of them subscribing to the theory that positive thinking will yield positive results. People who identified as spiritually fulfilled were nearly twice as likely to believe in the law of attraction as those who weren’t (86% vs 45%). Similarly, these same respondents, who made up 69 percent of those polled, were more likely to claim that they have control over their own happiness (86% vs. 44%). The survey also found plenty of support for other spiritual concepts like karma (69%), fate (75%) and the existence of a higher power (85%).

The List: Best Books on Spirituality, According to Experts

1. “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra

Keep in mind that success in life doesn’t necessarily relate to wealth in the monetary sense. Matador Network says, “In his classic book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra discusses the importance of success in life. For Chopra, success is defined as happiness and the realization of goals, although success is not limited to wealth. Chopra lays down seven laws found in nature used to create spiritual success. These laws include karma (cause and effect) and dharma (purpose in life). Chopra’s popularity lies in the way he is able to take ancient Vedic teachings and present them to a Western audience. He sold 2.3 million copies of this book, which has been translated into 30 languages.”

Happier Human shares that the book “is all about making your dreams come true—from a spiritual perspective. Chopra is an Indian American author of spiritual books and an advocate of alternative medicine. He is one of the most prominent figures of the New Age movement. As stated in the title, this book is based on natural laws governing all of creation. It focuses on seven laws and/or philosophical concepts, namely the ‘Law of Pure Potentiality,’ ‘Law of Giving,’ ‘Law of Karma,’ ‘Law of Least Effort,’ ‘Law of Intention and Desire,’ ‘Law of Detachment,’ and ‘Law of Dharma.’ Chopra emphasizes that we need to apply these laws in our lives if we want to reach our dreams and accomplish our deepest desires.”

“Deepak Chopra is a spiritual guru and has been featured on Oprah… chances are, you know him already! He’s an author and alternative healing advocate. This spiritual book is all about the seven spiritual laws. Feeling connected to our environment, slowing down, and observing our own energy can help us reach our true potential. Chopra encourages you to practice defenselessness, letting go of attachments, allowing your money to flow, and making conscious life choices, among others when seeking spiritual enlightenment. The great thing, he shares with us, is that our spiritual growth can manifest as personal happiness, success, and living your best life,” writes Wild Simple Joy.

2. “Untethered Soul” by Michael A. Singer

“Written by Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul gives a perfect example of how we are lost in a dreamlike state. It is one of the best books on spirituality, if you want to understand how your mind runs your life and what you can do to get out of that illusion and get to the seat of the soul; to consciousness,” states Fearless Soul.

This book is packed with useful information while also being accessible to all, according to Through the Phases. “The Untethered Soul helps us to get in touch with who we really are. By using meditation and mindfulness, Michael Singer shows how to tap into our consciousness and release ourselves from our minds. The book is divided into five parts and is written in a light hearted tone, which makes the heaps of information easy to digest!”

“Unlock your inner potential and discover inner peace with The Untethered Soul – a #1 New York Times bestseller. Author and spiritual teacher Michael A. Singer takes readers on a transformative journey that explores the source of thoughts and emotions, and provides simple yet profound solutions for releasing limiting beliefs. Through meditation and mindfulness, Singer shows how to live in the present moment and release painful memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization. This book offers a life-changing perspective for anyone looking to let go of mental and emotional limitations, and is now available in a special hardcover gift edition,” mentions Read This Twice.

3. “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle

“As the title suggests, this book revolves around the philosophy of living in the moment. Even though this is an oft-repeated phrase in the world of philosophy and even by ‘wannabe deep’ people, it’s very hard to realize. The human mind is trained to learn from the past and dream about the future. However, this book offers great advice and even better meditations on this philosophy that might just change your life,” explains Go Book Mart.

Lovejoy & Wonder writes, “Though our list is in no particular order, this book is one of the most influential and on the top ten lists of many people including Oprah. Written by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, it teaches you the power you have when you become present and live in each moment. Learn how to get out of your self-inflicted suffering thoughts and find peace in your everyday life.”

This book ranks near the top in books about spirituality, according to Sumeeta Seeks. “This is hands down one of the best spirituality books of all time. This book has served as an introduction to spirituality and living in the present moment for so many beginners. I was transfixed as I listened to it on audiobook, narrated by Eckhart Tolle himself. My mind was blown! I finally realized how my patterns of behavior (he calls them ‘pain bodies’) were subconsciously manipulating the way I related to others. I also learned how my depression was linked to the past, and my anxiety was linked to the future, but happiness was only in the present moment. I started seeing life in a whole new light after reading this book, and it is one I have returned to time after time.”

4. “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz

“The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is yet another gift to the world from Oprah: Ruiz’s four agreements are based on ancient Toltec wisdom and provide a relatively simple formula for living well. The four agreements are: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best. Ruiz’s formula for a happy and successful life is surprisingly simple and easy to remember. Easy enough, at least, that Ruiz later decided to add a fifth agreement: Be skeptical but learn to listen,” writes Matador Network.

Read This Twice labels this a must-read. “Transform your life with The Four Agreements, a powerful code of conduct based on ancient Toltec wisdom. Discover the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. This New York Times bestseller has sold over 6.5 million copies in the U.S. alone, and has been translated into 40 languages worldwide. Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, and other spiritual leaders praise the book’s simple yet powerful message, making it a must-read for anyone seeking true happiness and love.”

Through the Phases says that “The Four Agreements provides a code for living that can transform our lives for the better! This wisdom is shared by Miguel Ruiz, a shamanic teacher, who learnt the agreements from his Toltec ancestors. This is a book that is bound to make you question how you’re currently living and start making positive changes!”

5. “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle

Yet another top-ranked spirituality book written by Eckhart Tolle. Lovejoy & Wonder shares that “Eckhart Tolle believes that this is a time of transformation from ego and inner conflict to a higher state of mind and consciousness. Drawing on his own personal insights and ancient teachings he seeks to help illuminate and enlighten people to a new way of experiencing the world and live a truly fulfilling existence.”

“Oprah was my brother’s graduation speaker at Stanford, and she gave this book out to everyone who was graduating that year. It was also one of her book club selections. If that isn’t endorsement enough, it is by the same incredible author as The Power of Now (see #1 above). This book expands upon his previous novel by explaining to readers how they can transcend their egos to achieve true bliss. The ego is often the source of so much of our conflict and suffering. He also shows us how our thoughts about any given situation in our lives is not the situation itself, but rather our thoughts about the situation. An inspiring book from one of the great spiritual minds of our time,” writes Sumeeta Seeks.

“I had read Tolle’s Power of Now a long time ago and followed it with A New Earth,” says Wild Simple Joy. “A New Earth presents the possibility that, for the first time in our planet’s history, we can lead billions of people to their own awakening. He implores us to look at the current state of humanity, but also look at our potential for change. The potential is there for an overwhelming shift in consciousness to help us make a more peaceful, balanced, loving world. As a writer, Eckhart Tolle presents his concepts in a simple and easy manner. In the book, he helps lead you, the reader, to your own shift in consciousness. Unlike some books on spiritual growth, Tolle does not offer tasks for the reader to complete, but instead talks in terms of each person exploring their own inner and outer worlds to discover their own life’s purpose. This is an easy spirituality book for beginners to read.”
