It turns out that phrases like “scaredy cats” and “frisky felines” are more than just a saying.
So, how do you know if your kitty is as sweet as you think? It turns out they have their own way of smiling. In fact, a new study reveals that for cats, eye narrowing movements are their actual way of smiling, even though many breeds may seem to have a permanent grin on their faces. So, that squinty look your fluff ball gives you sometimes means they are happy to see you!

1. Maine Coon
The Maine Coon breed is often nicknamed as a friendly giant. Friendly and fluffy? Sounds like a great combination. “The breed began as a barn cat working to keep New England farmers’ supplies safe from rodents, and still prefers being part of his humans’ everyday lives,” says Chewy.
Maine Coon cats are large in size and personality. “With a reputation for being amiable, loving, and one of the largest feline breeds around, the Maine Coon has been called ‘the dog of the cat world.’ The exact origins of this big, friendly kitty are unknown, but it is believed to have first emerged in the state of Maine (where it remains the official state cat) from a close ancestor to Norwegian Forest cats or Siberians. 3. Ragdoll
Ragdoll Cats have been filling homes since the 1960s, Ragdolls are beautiful and also have a friendly personality. “Developed in the 1960s in California, the Ragdoll has beautiful blue eyes and an eager-to-please attitude. They can even easily learn to come when called and play fetch. This well-behaved kitty requires minimal grooming, and will always return the maximum in affection,” says Chewy.
“Ragdolls are gentle, laid-back cats that love to follow you wherever you go. They’re great lap cats who’ve been known to greet family members at the door. Plus, they can learn to play fetch! Known for their sweet temperaments, Ragdolls get along nicely with other cats as well as dogs. Their gentle nature also makes them well-suited to families with children and seniors. While they’re playful, they’re not overly active – they prefer to hang out on the floor instead of finding a high perch to rest on,” adds Pumpkin Care.
“When such a cute name is chosen for a whole breed of cats, you know there are plenty of cuddles to be had once you welcome a Ragdoll cat into your life. Recognized as one of the friendliest cat breeds, Ragdolls love nothing more than to spend time with their owner even if that means following you around when you’re too busy for hugs,” says Purina

4. Scottish Fold
Scottish Fold cats are adorable and known to be one of the sweetest breeds. “Not only are Scottish Folds adorable – they’re adaptable, sweet, and loving companions. These cats are quiet and docile and aren’t demanding in any sense. They get along happily with other cats and dogs, as well as children,” adds Pumpkin Care.
It is no wonder why Taylor Swift has three of these kitties that even go on tour with her. “The Scottish Fold is the happiest when next to their human owners. They’re so keen to participate in all the activities that you will soon start suspecting they have no idea they’re actually a cat and not a human. If you already have pets then adding a friendly Scottish Fold to your family is a great addition. “If you are looking for a cat breed that fits in perfectly with a household that is already full, the Scottish fold could be a great option for you. Unlike many other cat breeds, Scottish folds actually do not like spending time alone. They often do best in homes with at least one other pet. They will definitely give you plenty of cuddles and might even curl up on your lap for movie night,” explains Oakland Veterinarian.
5. Siamese
Siamese Cats have been a well-loved and appreciated breed for hundreds of years. “Popular today for being talkative, playful family members, Siamese cats are actually among the oldest cat breeds in the world. Though famous for being favorites of Siam royalty in the 1800s, they are mentioned in Thai manuscripts dating back as far as 1350 AD. Siamese cats are easy to recognize with their vivid blue eyes, dark faces and paws, and light-colored bodies. Their unique coloring is believed to stem from a form of partial albinism,” adds Trupanion.
Siamese cats are outgoing and get along well with people. “For a sassier sort of friendly, all eyes are on the Siamese. They are known for their outgoing and spirited personalities and are generally able to get along with all kinds of people (and pets),” explains Rover.
With how friendly Siamese Cats are, sometimes they are seen to be “dog-like”. “Siamese cats are often referred to as dog-like for their loyal, affectionate personalities and trusting, gentle disposition,” explains Country Living.
Siamese Cats can be seen as the life of a party! If you are looking for a friendly cat that will not hide when guests are over then look no future. “If you are looking for a social feline that loves a good chat, you will look forward to spending time with a Siamese. These kittens know how to make their presence felt with their boisterous personality. Beautiful and intelligent, these felines are also quite fond of humans.
