Stepping into a room, leaving a trail of confidence in your wake – that’s the power of the perfect men’s cologne. But with countless options lining the shelves, finding your signature scent can feel like navigating a fragrant labyrinth. Fear not, gentlemen! This guide unveils the aromatic secrets to finding your ideal olfactory soulmate, from the crisp invigoration of citrus to the warm embrace of woody depths. Dive in and discover the best men’s cologne that speaks your unique fragrance language.

Your scent is a part of your style and can leave a lasting impact on those who meet you (for better or for worse!). We’re not alone in that feeling. A recent study shows that a man’s scent was a major factor for women seeking a potential partner. Of course, finding the right cologne can be challenging with so many options. Doesn’t it seem like the scents all seem the same after just smelling a few? We’re hoping to make that process easier for you — rather than sniffing bottle after bottle.

Cologne Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the right cologne is an important decision. After all, your scent is one of the first things people notice about you. So how do you choose the perfect cologne? Here are a few tips:

  1. Consider your personality and lifestyle. What kind of image do you want to project? Are you looking for a sophisticated scent, a sporty scent, or something more casual? Once you know, you can start to narrow down your choices.
  2. Think about when and where you’ll be wearing the cologne. Are you looking for a daytime cologne, an evening cologne, or something that you can wear all day long? For example, a light, citrusy scent might be perfect for a summer day, while a heavier, more musky scent might be better for a night out.
  3. Test out different colognes. The best way to find the right cologne for you is to test out different ones. Go to a department store or fragrance boutique and ask the salesperson for recommendations. Once you’ve found a few colognes that you like, spray them on your skin and walk around for a while. This will give you a chance to see how the scent develops and how it interacts with your body chemistry.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’re not sure what kind of cologne to choose, ask a friend, family member, or salesperson for help. They can help you to narrow down your choices and find a cologne that you’ll love.

Here are a few additional tips for choosing and wearing cologne:

  • Apply cologne to your pulse points. Pulse points are areas of your body where the blood vessels are close to the skin, such as your wrists, neck, and chest. Applying cologne to your pulse points will help the scent to project more effectively.
  • Don’t overdo it. A little cologne goes a long way. Too much cologne can be overwhelming and unpleasant.
  • Let the cologne dry completely before putting on your clothes. This will help to prevent the cologne from staining your clothes.
  • Store your cologne in a cool, dark place. Heat and light can break down the fragrance molecules and make your cologne smell less potent.

Choosing the right cologne is a personal decision. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best way to find the perfect cologne for you is to experiment and find a scent that you love and that makes you feel confident.

They are not just about smelling great; they’re about making a statement, sparking emotions, and leaving an impact. So, gentlemen, don’t underestimate the power of the right cologne. The List: Best Men’s Cologne, According to Experts

1. Bleu de Chanel

The cologne that we found most recommended across fragrance experts’ lists is Bleu de Chanel. Why? “Bleu de Chanel has everything you want in a cologne: freshness and longevity. It’s crisp, refined, and elegant, yet it plays to modern styles and scents. It’s not too musky, either. Instead, it boasts a woody cedar undertone with lingering traces of grapefruit, making it a fresh, clean-smelling option. The scent itself is also very strong, meaning that one spray can last the entire day—from the altar to the afterparty. This tantalizing scent is perfect for the man who appreciates classic and refined tastes, thanks to its eclectic combination of woody and fresh aromas. It’s also ideal for a guy on the go. Since one spritz of this formula is strong enough to last all day, you’ll never have to worry about reapplying—an especially handy asset on your wedding day,” says Brides.com.

Bleu de Chanel is the cologne for the modern man, confidently balancing charisma and charm. “It’s easy to see why Bleu de Chanel’s woody-aromatic fragrance has become a best seller for the French luxury fashion house. It’s sophisticated and elegant without trying too hard – in that very French, very Chanel way – from the super-minimalist dark blue bottle to the juice. Bleu de Chanel created by Jacques Polge (Chanel Antaeus), has a highly distinctive citrus-fresh opening, with grapefruit and lemon at the fore- it’s easy to see why it’s a go-to cologne for many men,” writes DapperConfidential.

Curious to know why Bleu de Chanel is hailed as a versatile and iconic choice? “A clean, woody fragrance, this Chanel scent boasts a 4.8-star rating for a reason: The citrus and amber notes complement each other perfectly, while the cedarwood adds an element of punch,” shares CNN.

2. Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette

The number two on the expert’s list for the best men’s cologne is Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette. “One of the most distinctive colognes on the market, Dior Sauvage contains hints of ambroxan, Sichuan pepper and reggio bergamot, making it perfect for the man who wants to stand out from the crowd,” raves CNN.

Dior Sauvage is the scent for the modern man who’s unafraid to conquer the unknown. “Classic, crisp and always magical, Dior’s Sauvage evokes rocky landscapes and desert vistas. To maintain the rawness of its environmental muse, this wildly popular cologne opens up with a fresh burst of Calabrian bergamot and spicy pepper before moving into a more spacious array of middle notes that include Sichuan pepper, lavender, vetiver, patchouli and geranium. But even in the desert, a men’s cologne needs a touch of wood. Base notes of ambroxan, cedar and labdanum give Sauvage its warm, woody profile,” writes Mens Journal.

Can Dior Sauvage be your perfect cologne, whether you’re going casual or dressing to impress? “The epitome of a modern yet classic, Sauvage is a spicy, fresh scent sure to grab the attention of anyone you pass. This warm blend of amber and cedar, topped with pepper and lavender undertones is unique yet sure to be a fan favorite for years to come. Plus, it’s not too overpowering but still lasts long on the skin. This fragrance is made for men who aren’t afraid to push their boundaries and try something modern and new. The potent blend leaves a fresh yet unexpected impression, ideal for the groom who wants to make a statement on his big day,” says Brides.com.

3. Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò

The number three expert recommendation for the Best Men’s cologne is Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò. “Since its launch in 1996, Acqua di Giò has become a staple of the fragrance industry. It could be the perfect price point or the clear matte bottle that looks timelessly elegant, but we’re pretty sure it’s the fragrance that makes this cologne a best-seller. Marine-inspired notes give this a clean, classic feel, while bright notes of Calabrian bergamot, neroli and green tangerine will keep you smelling effortlessly fresh, even after a long day,” says MensJournal.

The blend of aquatic, woody, and citrus notes in Acqua di Giò is simply irresistible. “You wouldn’t think of rosemary as an ideal cologne ingredient, but this Armani Beauty scent is an aquatic-inspired option that’s super fresh and clean. Acqua Di Gio is ideal for the man who doesn’t want an overpowering, woody fragrance,” writes CNN.

Looking for a signature scent that’s uniquely you? If you’re a fan of fresh, clean fragrances, Acqua di Giò might be your next signature scent. “The 1990s-era fragrance Armani Acqua di Gio Eau de Toilette is still in style today. This perfume, a favorite of many of my friends, simply does not stale and retains its allure over 30 years later. Even though it is not as well known as it was in the 1990s, Alberto Morillas’ brilliance is still highly regarded today. Who doesn’t love a trip to the Mediterranean? We are definitely in need of one,” adds DapperConfidential.

4. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

The number four expert recommendation for the Best Men’s cologne is Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Pour Homme Eau de Toilette. “When D & G Light Blue Eau Intense Pour Homme EDT was launched in 2007, it became one of the best selling men’s cologne for the Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana and is still going strong. Created by Alberto Morillas (Bulgari Man EDT, cK One EDT, Gucci Guilty Absolute EDP), Light Blue won the FiFi Award Fragrance of the Year Luxe in 2008 and it’s easy to see why. It feels distinctly casual and summery with prominent citrus notes including grapefruit, bergamot, and Sicilian Mandarin. In the heart notes, there’s a touch of spice with pepper, rosemary, and juniper adding a sharper, more distinct vibe. The base is musk, incense, and oakmoss. All in all, it’s an uncomplicated, fresh scent and that’s equally easy to wear to the office or the beach,” says DapperConfidential.

From charismatic to mysterious, we’re decoding the scents that suit your different moods. “If you’re naturally drawn to fresh aquatics, then Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue Pour Homme may be the cologne for you. Each spray will take you on a trip to the sunny seasides of the Mediterranean, with top notes of bright grapefruit, bergamot, Sicilian mandarin and juniper. To keep the scent sensual and masculine, middle notes of black pepper, rosemary and Brazilian rosewood fuse into musk, incense and oakmoss base notes. Make this cologne part of your daily routine or save it for seaside escapes,” suggests MensJournal.

Have you ever wondered if the right cologne can turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one? “Though it comes in a small bottle by default, it packs a major punch, and it is definitely recommended for romantic wear. This UK-based fragrance features top notes of refreshing bergamot, Sicilian mandarin, and grapefruit peel. Those notes give way to aromatic rosemary and sensual rosewood, ensuring that you evoke a sensation of strong masculinity whenever you wear this cologne. The base notes accentuate this effect, including oakmoss, incense, and musk wood. All in all, it’s a robust and well-rounded fragrance that’s always a delight to wear and perceive. You can put it on when you are wearing a suit just as often as when you’re wearing a button-down T-shirt or aloha shirt on a tropical vacation,” writes SI.

5. GUCCI Guilty

Our next pick is from another esteemed fashion house. “Gucci Guilty is easily one of the best colognes for men in 2023, and there’s a core reason why: its unique fragrance blend is unmatched, plus you benefit from some of the brand recognition this cologne offers. This cologne features a well-rounded scent mixture featuring notes of orange blossom, bergamot, and musk. At the same time, the scent mixture is fairly straightforward and simple, making it a great choice for traditional men who want what works, not what is unnecessarily complex. This cologne is recommended particularly for casual wear, as its scent will be absorbed and noticed more quickly compared to other fragrances,” writes SI.

If you’re in the mood for a fragrance that’s bold, contemporary, and irresistible, Gucci Guilty might be your perfect match. Discover the art of layering scents and creating your own unique, intoxicating blend. “This classic Gucci scent is as provoking as they come. Its allure lies in its blend of spicy red chili pepper opposing richer, woody notes of rose, cedarwood, orange blossom, neroli, and patchouli. Inspired by popular scents of the ’70s, Guilty Pour Homme features unexpected touches of vinegar and salt,” shares Vogue.

Are you ready to embark on a fragrant adventure to discover the cologne that resonates with your inner self? “Made for the modern-day Gatsby, the latest addition to the Gucci Guilty line provides a long-lasting olfactory journey that begins with a gin-soaked lemony delight that develops into a woody and earthy aromatic mystery with a musky finish. Though this new classic might seem ideal to pair with crisp linen suiting in a garden party setting, it’s also equally fitting for the refined urbanite to take in the summer sun for an outdoor business lunch,” says WWD.

6. Calvin Klein Eternity

The number six expert recommendation for the best men’s cologne is Calvin Klein Eternity. “Eternity EDT is evergreen: sage, cedar, bergamot, and moss combine for an earthen and refreshing finish, and at a price that is friendly to the greens in your wallet. This is one of those scents that everyone recognizes, since it’s an easy pick as a signature scent, or as a gift for the cologne-curious,” says GQ.com.

Time to embrace your inner fragrance connoisseur and explore a world of olfactory delights. “It seems like Calvin Klein’s Eternity for Men has been around since the beginning of time. In reality, it’s only been three decades since the fragrance’s launch in 1990, and we’ve loved it every step of the way. Characterized as an ‘aromatic fougere,’ the cologne is brimming with exquisite notes like lavender, lemon, bergamot, sage, basil and lily. Base notes of sandalwood, vetiver, musk, amber and Brazilian rosewood round off this scent made for the modern man. Modeled off Klein’s vision of today’s man, Eternity is for the guy at peace with himself and his place in the world, dedicated to basic values of family, work, health and happiness,” writes Men’s Journal.

No need for a magic spell to be irresistible; the enchantment lies in your choice of cologne. “Another enduring classic from 1988, Eternity is a romantic floral fragrance that was inspired by lasting love. Clearly, the love affair with this scent carries on too: It’s decidedly unisex, and works for both him and her. Notes of freesia, mandarin, sage, white lily, patchouli, and sandalwood make for a timeless blend,” shares Vogue.

7. Aventus Creed

Finally, number seven on the expert recommendation for the best men’s cologne is Aventus Creed. “With top notes of lemon, pink pepper, and bergamot giving way to pineapple and jasmine, before the base notes of birch, ambergris, and cedarwood kick in, it’s a heady, complex scent that’s earned its place as a perennial top seller since its arrival in 2010. The only downside is that, although the fragrance itself will leave your nose delighted, the price tag may well make your eyes water,” says Time.com.

The right cologne isn’t just a scent; it’s a statement. “This best-selling fragrance from Creed was introduced in 2010 and continues to be a fan favorite. It features crisp top notes of apple, blackcurrant, pineapple, and bergamot, with heftier heart and base notes including birch, patchouli, vanilla, and musk. It’s inspired by the life of a historic emperor and meant to symbolize strength, power, and success—who wouldn’t want that?” adds Vogue.

Is your cologne collection missing that one scent that captures your essence and sets you apart from the crowd? “Before decamping to Paris and pivoting to fragrance, Creed made its name as a tailoring operation in the London of the 1700s. So, it’s fitting that the brand’s fragrances are formulated with cut-and-sew precision. A decade after its debut, Aventus remains Creed’s calling card. The fruity scent features top notes of pineapple, bergamot, and apple balanced by hints of birch, ambergris, and sandalwood—a strong, masculine combination that (much like a perfectly-cut suit) will help you stand up a little straighter and walk a little taller,” writes GQ.com.

  1. Sauvage and Eau Sauvage are two VERY different fragrances. Eau Sauvage has indeed been around since 1966. The tripe water that is Sauvage was only introduced in 2015. They are not otherwise related and Sauvage is not a flanker of Eau Sauvage. Eau Sauvage was, before a deadly reformulation, one of the great fragrances. Some of its flankers like the 2012 Eau Sauvage Parfum were also classics. But Sauvage, the 2015 abomination, is not related to Eau Sauvage and is an ambroxan overload mass appeal to the lowest common denominator. It, like everything on this list, might be well selling but none are great or even good. Dig deeper, even after IFRA all but killed perfumery with bans on crucial ingredients like oakmoss, there are some great fragrances out there. Start with Rogue Perfumery. Their line is se ond to none.

    1. I love the oldy Joop it’s my favorite it smells so clean and fresh my man has to wear it daily

      1. Yes!!!!! One of my favorites but it is a winter fragrance for me…really heavy 1 spray will do ya…glad someone mentioned it!! Cheers!!

  2. I can’t believe that Prada Luna Rossa didn’t make the cut or be number one. Every time my husband wears it I just want to take my clothes off & jump him. So sexy!!

    1. Love this comment! Now I want to get this for my husband. Thanks for this recommendation. Something about a really amazing fragrance on my man is just so sexy. He’s wearing Tom Fords Ebene Fume Eau de Parfum ( genderless Parfum) right now ,to me it’s a masculine fragrance and it comes in 4 sizes which I love because it’s not cheap , but well worth the money & he makes it last. Normally he wears Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Eau de Parfum which has been a favorite for yrs. My son wears Azzaro The Most Wanted Parfum and I really love this one , and I think my husband smells so good when he wears it. I’ve had a few people say they love Azzaro The Most Wanted on their men as well. I love how fragrance smells different on each person. I have the Tom Ford’s Vanille Eau De Parfum Spray which I prefer on myself , and one thing about Tom Ford’s Parfum is you can layer them, so I use bath & body products that have a similar fragrance and I will sometimes wear it with Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist Vanilla & Salted Caramel Hair & Body Perfume Spray. Just yummy. But my point is that Tom Ford’s Parfum layers so nicely with other fragrances. Even the Ebénè Fume had a spicy sweet combination when layered. I know I have more , but this is what he’s been wearing lately or gravitating to.

Thanks again for your recommendation,I’m definitely looking into it.

      1. Have your men tried the original Azzaro cologne? It smells FANTASTIC. I get compliments from strangers almost every time I eear it. My wife’s friends ALWAYS make me hug them so they can smell me. They love it! I can’t find it in store but buy it online at some of the larger online perfume etailers.

Recommend you give it a shot, I think they will like it and you will love it.

  3. A Must Have Are The Creed Line-(Silver Mountain). Paco Rabbane (Elixir) Mens Parfum Alot Of Compliments. Versace Eros, Aramis An Oldie But Goodie Especially An Oil Base. Guerlain Has Very Good Notes I Used Heritage Back In The Early Days, But Interested In Trying Habit Rouge By Guerlain. And Finally Versace Signature Pour Homme Is A Great Fragrance, Aqua De Gio & Chrome Can’t Go Wrong.
I Myself Lean More Towards The Mens Parfum Vs. Eau Toilette Vs. Cologne

    1. Chrome has been my go to for many years and I have been named the best smelling man amongst my peers since using Chrome. 😁

  4. Article probably published by some younger fella..😄.The oldest fragnances are chan.blue and calv.kl…I’ve never heard about some blue atlantis something….

  5. I recieved Blu Atlas Atlantis as a gift. Don’t even bother trying it. It’s average at best, although the atomizer is great and the magnetic cap is nice. A darker version of Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green. And I couldn’t find it on Fragrantica. This article may be a veiled advertisement for it. Listing it with some of the best selling colognes to try to give it credibility.

  6. Wear your cologne at home. Fragrance respects no boundaries.
I had high end tickets to a theater performance.
A couple sat in front of me. He reaked of “fragrance.”
I hope my coughing disrupted his theater enjoyment as much as his cologne did mine.

    1. 🙌🏽i totally agree i wouldn’t waste my money on anything on this horrible list😩 this shit is laughable😭

  7. Wow what an overplayed and underwhelming list…sausage elixir is leagues above regular sausage… The other ones are just generic bs scents… Those are scents of 2017…. How about creed aventus…Mont Blanc explorer, Louis Vuitton hombre, Layton, rouge 540, bond no. 9 bond no.9.com, Maison margiela by the fireplace…I mean come on man…

  8. People act like designer fragrances just became popular many of us who knows the name of these name brands have been wearing them for decades those fragrances are just a few there’s way better men fragrances than that there’s a store called perfume plus that sells perfumes from all over the world

  9. if were talking designer fragrances… here we go…

savauge is a cheaper, less sophisticated version of bleu de channel. Y by YSL is the better. Aqua do gio smells like every girls boyfriend. the tom ford is a niche and shouldn’t be in this list. Eros is only good for clubs and outdoor winter dates, instead, La nuit de lohmme by YSL(my all time fav), is by far and away superior for those occasions. for spring and summer, allure sport extreme is still a top 3 compliment getter for me(next to creed aventus, and mahogany woods from bath and body works *discontinued*) lastly, spice bomb from victor and rolf will be the ace in the hole you keep, just in case.

    1. Who wears a blue fragrance on an outdoor winter date? No no. That’s what woody scents are for. Sausage and Bleu are different enough that there’s no reason not to get both.

I like Aventus as much as the next guy, but at this point everyone is (and has been) wearing it, so if you want to smell like everyone else, go for it.

  10. So the number one most preferred by women men’s cologne is….? I have read several reviews and Paco Rabanne seemed to rank fairly high and I think that it was Blue De Chanel that also left a very desirable opinion. But here I set unsure of which one(s) might leave the ladies in awe. Opinions are truly valued in this category, to me anyways.

    1. I’ve tried a couple Paco scents and they were uninspired. Bleu is the best from this list, but if you want something unique and masculine go with MFK Grand Soir.

  11. Ive been wearing Paul Sebastion for thirty years .Not one week passes that at least 3people women and men ask me what i’m wearing

  12. Carolina Herrera, the original scent for men was always a great one. Classic & not over powering. They still sell it on Amazon. If you haven’t tried it you should!

  13. As nice as these colognes are, if you take a bath in it VS a few gentle mist sprays, there not all that nice anymore.
