The simple act of brushing your teeth at the day’s start and finish may not seem like a big deal, but in reality it’s an integral part of keeping the entire body in check. Of course, these days there are countless toothbrush options if you head to your local supermarket or Target. And with oral hygiene proving to be so vital for overall health, it’s no surprise consumers are often on the hunt for the very best toothbrush around — especially when it comes to electric toothbrushes.
Research published on StudyFinds over the years reveals links between gum disease to everything from heart and blood pressure complications to mental health problems. While poor dental hygiene is most commonly linked to gum disease, studies suggest it also poses an increased risk of heart disease, mental health issues, and autoimmune conditions.
“An important implication of our findings is the need for effective communication between dental and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients obtain an effective treatment plan targeting both oral and wider health to improve their existing overall health and reduce the risk of future illness,” Professor Krish Nirantharakumar, who recently co-authored a study out of the University of Birmingham, explains.
Another recent survey report that one in 10 Americans don’t brush their teeth before going to sleep – yikes! Moreover, one in 10 Americans only brush at night twice to four times a week, indicating that many of us have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to taking care of those precious pearly whites.
While traditional toothbrushes can get the job done, electric toothbrushes are simply better at removing plaque and reducing the risk of gingivitis, according to Harvard Health Publishing. Studies suggest that proper use of a manual toothbrush could be as effective as an electric toothbrush, but most people simply aren’t brushing long enough or using the correct techniques for plaque removal.
Investing in a quality and efficient electric toothbrush can help you get your dental hygiene back on track, cutting down your risk for gum disease and other future health issues. That’s why StudyFinds set out to find the best electric toothbrushes on the market.
For our findings, we visited 10 of the leading expert websites to see which electric toothbrushes were rated the highest. Our list is ranked based on the most-recommended toothbrushes across these sites.
The List: Best Electric Toothbrushes, As Recommended By Experts
1. Oral-B iO Series 9
The Oral-B io Series 9 is a splurge, but many consider it the best high-end electric toothbrush money can buy. Its impressive features include a timer and pressure sensor, seven modes, a 14-day battery life, and easy phone pairing.
“The iO uses Bluetooth to sync with your smartphone and show you exactly where you’re cleaning (and what you’re missing) with a graphical, color-coded display,” writes Forbes. “With 16 zones, this gadget can do the most accurate job of showing you exactly what parts of your mouth you need to focus on.”
Other features include a charge light, two-minute timer, timer display, and a sleek and stylish design. “Suffice to say, our testers were impressed with all this tech, with nearly everybody finding it powerful and effective at cleaning thoroughly,” Good Housekeeping notes.
2. Philips Sonicare 4100
Philips is one of most trusted brands when it comes to electric toothbrushes, with several of the Philips Sonicare products making the top of expert lists. The Philips Sonicare 4100 ranked particularly high for its reasonable price point, full features, and effectiveness.
“The Philips Sonicare 4100 has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing but is less noisy… It’s compatible with a smaller range of (more-expensive) brush heads. It charges via USB and has a pressure sensor,” The New York Times writes.
While many of the Phillips Sonicare line of electric toothbrushes ring in at over $100, this modestly priced model is a great overall pick at just $50. “The Sonicare 4100 is a great way to improve your oral hygiene routine,” CNN writes. “A gentle mode makes it easy for beginners to get used to high-tech brushing.”
3. Oral-B Pro 1000
The Oral-B Pro 1000 electric toothbrush is a top pick among dental experts for its brush compatibility, built-in pressure sensor and affordable price point.
“You don’t need a smart brush. You can spend a little bit less and get a more powerful cleaner with Oral-B’s Pro 1000,” Wired writes. “Oral-B’s electric toothbrushes all have oscillating brush heads, which are those circular bristles that get right in between all your teeth. The Pro 1000 has been around for a while and continues to outshine more expensive models with fancier features.”
The brush also has useful features like a timer to move to different areas of your mouth, and a two-minute timer to alert you when brushing time has ended.
“Given that most people tend to use just one or two cleaning modes on even the most sophisticated brushes, the Oral-B Pro 1000 clears away the confusion and focuses on delivering a powerful clean with its round cross-action brush head,” writes Live Science.
4. Spotlight Sonic Toothbrush
It’s hard to make a name for yourself in a market dominated by big brand companies, but Spotlight managed to do just that. The Spotlight Sonic Toothbrush is well-liked for its three cleaning modes, diverse brush head sizes, effective use, and long battery life.
“Our best electric toothbrush is as gentle as a manual one, with the deep clean effect of a hygienist session,” Good Housekeeping writes. “Its rapid sonic vibrations push toothpaste and air to hard to reach areas, successfully removing plaque, reducing staining and freshening breath.”
Many reviewers love this model for its price for value, simple functioning, and deep clean feel.
“I expected a lot from this brand, which was founded by two cosmetic dentists, and the Spotlight Oral Care Sonic Toothbrush more than delivered,” The Telegraph writes. “I had never imagined that an electric toothbrush could be a stylish accessory, but this one has a smooth, ergonomic design that’s a minimalist’s dream. One brushed silver button switches it off and on, and toggles between three brushing modes.”
5. Colgate Hum
If you’re someone who needs a bit of pep talk to continue your journey of self-care, the mid-budget Colgate Hum is a great choice. The electric toothbrush features timers, mouth zone changes, and three brushing modes.
“Hum does something no other toothbrush does: It rewards you for brushing diligence. You get points when you brush, with more points for brushing thoroughly for the full two minutes,” Forbes writes. “And when you accrue enough points, you get actual cash discounts on replacement brush heads—a clever way to not only gamify dental hygiene, but to reward you in ways that matter in real life.”
The Colgate Hum is another great choice for those who are looking to make the transition over to a smart, electric toothbrush without shelling out hundreds of dollars.
“That’s not pocket change, but it’s about what you’ll spend on a decent electric toothbrush without any app connectivity or smart features. If you’ve been eyeing electric toothbrushes, this is the one to get,” Wired writes.
