Best Wheelbarrows: Top 5 Brands Most Recommended For Heavy Hauls

Anyone who loves gardening knows it’s a chore to haul dirt and mulch around your yard. Investing in a quality wheelbarrow saves both time and effort. Moving debris can be physically exhausting, and using one of the best wheelbarrows makes for a more efficient way to get jobs done around your yard. Besides, lifting those heavy things piece by piece, can result in pain in places you didn’t know existed.

In fact, a recent poll shows seven in 10 people experience pain or discomfort during everyday activities. The survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, finds nearly 70 percent of Americans wish they could replace one of their body parts with a new one that works better. Millennials are actually more likely to cite pain during daily activities than baby boomers (76% vs. 59%), indicating that working remotely over the past two years may be a contributing factor.

Regardless of age, nearly four in 10 people (38%) would opt for a new back. Nearly three-fifths add they’re “always” or “often” thinking about their pain more than what they’re doing at the moment. When is the discomfort at its peak? One in five respondents say between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. At the same time, more than half the poll (51%) say they’re “always” or “often” uncomfortable while sleeping.

Despite their setbacks, nearly nine in 10 feel confident in their ability to manage their pain. Respondents are turning to stretches or physical exercise (41%) and over-the-counter medication (39%) to cope. Another way to manage and prevent pain could be to opt for easier ways to go about tasks like yard work, with tools that do the hard part for you.

This wheelbarrow from True Temper features “a steel 6 cubic feet tray—roomy enough for most homeowner needs—that’s durable enough to handle everything from mulch to gravel. The flat-free 15.5-inch rubber tire doesn’t need air, so you’ll never have to take a beat to pump it up before getting down to work,” according to Forbes.

The New York Post points out it’s an Amazon favorite, with “multiple five-star ratings from customers on sturdiness and maneuverability.”

USA Today adds, “even when fully loaded with bricks, the True Temper never felt like it was falling or ‘running away’ downhill. The single flat-free rubber tire is sturdy, but filled with a soft material that provides good cushioning for rolling over rough ground, rocks, and branches.”

Just keep in mind, it’s on the larger, heavier side, so make sure you have space to properly store it.

2. Jackson Professional Tools Steel Wheelbarrow

Another strong, sturdy option is this wheelbarrow from Jackson Professional Tools. “With its steel tray, this wheelbarrow can carry just about anything you need including bricks, rocks, plants, and dirt. Steel trays also have the advantage of being more resilient to extreme temperatures, so it’s less prone to cracking in cold weather,” according to Better Homes & Gardens.

It also features hardwood handles, one flat-free tire and a tip-resistant design. The Spruce notes, “this is a commercial-grade product and suited for big jobs, requiring large, heavy loads.”

“There are cart-style wheelbarrows that can hold more weight, but this one has a strong blend of both sturdy design and the dumping capability you can only get with a single-wheeler,” suggests Popular Mechanics.

3. Best Choice Products Dual-Wheel Wheelbarrow

If you want a basic wheelbarrow for yard maintenance, check out this one from Best Choice Products. “It features two 13-inch rubber wheels built to withstand various terrains and an ergonomic rubber grip for enhanced user comfort. Bob Vila highlights “the low, squatty shape of the cart. It makes for easy loading and dumping. Plus, the traditional wheelbarrow-shaped bed would be easy for mixing up a batch of concrete or home-recipe potting soil. The foam-cushioned grip made for more comfortable, less slippery work.”

Garden Gate notes, it “has steel frames with powder coating to make it resistant to rust, so it will last a long while. This wheelbarrow is certainly a great value for all that it offers at its price.”

4. Rubbermaid Big Wheel Plastic Yard Cart

Real Simple crowns this Rubbermaid offering ‘Best Heavy-Duty Wheelbarrow’, thanks to the “durable plastic that resists dents, rust, and peeling, and the extra-wide handle allows you to steer and empty without strain. Because of the cart’s size and stability, you can fill it with whatever material or items you need, from concrete to flowers.”

The brand is known for making products that last. Forbes adds, “the cart’s handle is molded in, so you don’t have to stress about it breaking or becoming disconnected with time.”

It also travels well. Better Homes & Gardens notes, the wheels “are air-filled and measure 20 inches in diameter which makes them able to handle all terrains including soggy ground and gravelly, uneven paths.”

5. Marathon Green Yard Rover

Rounding out our top five is this budget-friendly wheelbarrow from Marathon Industries. Its two-wheel design is ideal for home gardening or landscaping projects. Garden Gate points out, “it has a large weight capacity of 300 pounds which feels like only 25 pounds due to smart leverages.”

Reviewers note it’s easy to assemble and travels well, thanks to “two 10-inch pneumatic tires are sturdy and roll easily over obstacles large and small, even up stairs thanks to the positioning of the tray supports,” suggests USA Today.

“Measuring roughly 27 inches long, 25 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, the polyurethane tray is on the smaller side. However, it’s great for transporting a few bags of mulch, soil, and other landscaping materials. It’s also ideal for hauling, weeding, and smaller garden products,” according to The Spruce.
