Best Shampoo For Thinning Hair: Top 5 Washes Most Recommended For Thicker Locks

Want to turn the volume up … on your hair? We’re writing to give you a heads up on the best shampoo for thinning hair, according to hair care experts. Because let’s face it: Thinning hair never seems to be a pleasant experience. And the array of products out there doesn’t make that experience easier. To narrow down your search, we’ve compiled 13 hair care experts’ consensus top picks for thinning, brittle, fine hair. Our Editor-in-Chief even chimed in with his own recommendation that’s helped him feel better about those thinning locks on his head, too.

Why does hair loss happen? Outside of genetics, life phases can be the cause. Menopause can result in a number of unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes or insomnia. However, one side-effect that many overlook is thinning hair and hair loss among middle-aged women. Estimates show that about 40 percent of women over the age of 60 will develop female pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia.

Something you can control though is how much fat you eat and the number on the scale. A recent study revealed that too much fat in your diet can also be bad for your hair. Researchers from Tokyo Medical and Dental University discovered that a high-fat diet accelerates hair thinning and hair loss as we age. Obesity also contributes to less luscious locks. Here’s why: In studies using mice, obesity introduced certain inflammatory signals to the body, blocking hair follicle regeneration and eventually leading to the loss of the follicles.

Sometimes hair loss is normal, like after pregnancy or with age. But if you have what you’d consider an excessive amount of lost strands, consult with a medical professional to diagnose the root of the problem. If you’re just wanting to give your hair a boost, reach for the best shampoo for thinning hair. Below are the top five expert-recommended products for you to try!

3. Shampoo by Blu Atlas

4. Biolage Advanced Full Density Thickening Shampoo

Byrdie says this product will reduce breakage, writing, “This pick gets top honors for taking a two-pronged approach to thinning hair. First, it goes to town by gently removing follicle-clogging impurities that can impede new hair growth. Then it delivers a host of important nutrients — biotin, zinc, and a gluco-omega blend — to strengthen the hair you have. So much so that, when used with the accompanying conditioner, it can reduce breakage by up to 95 percent.”

Cosmopolitan says, “This gentle shampoo earns [a] spot on this list due to its ability to remove build-up that tends to clog hair follicles and create a less-than-ideal environment for hair growth. Your hair will feel thicker, but it’ll also look healthy and shiny. Not to mention, it’s safe for color-treated hair, which is a win-win in my book.”

5. Ouai Fine Hair Shampoo

Forbes chooses this cleansing shampoo as a great option: “This cleanser packs biotin to fortify hair growth and structure as well as keratin for the same structural benefits (alongside softening, boosting shine and smoothing frizz). It also has chia seed oil to visibly plumpen and volumize strands, making it one of the best short- and long-term picks on the market today.”

“This color-safe gel shampoo by celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin offers a combination of biotin, hydrolyzed keratin and chia seed oil to help thicken hair. ‘Sebum secretion is that oil that makes your hair look greasy, so this [shampoo] helps control that, and it also fights frizz,’ said makeup and hair artist Francesca Maria Alfonso. It received a 4.4-star average rating from 1,429 reviews on Amazon,” NBC News reports.

Editor’s Choice: Hawthorne Thickening Shampoo

“Seeing my hair become significantly thinner in recent years has been a tough slap in the face when it comes to aging. Yep, it’s just one more realization that I’m over the hill. I’ve tried different thinning shampoos in that time, including some of the very expensive bottles. Sometime last year I gave Hawthorne a shot, and it can’t be pure coincidence that my hair feels and looks thicker than it’s been in quite some time,” says StudyFinds Editor-In-Chief Steve Fink.

“Besides the pleasant woodsy scent that isn’t too overwhelming (I hate any shampoo that I can smell on my pillow or just from moving around at any point), I don’t need to use too much to get a solid lather, even for having longer hair. I have no plans to give anything else a try for now. At about 12 bucks a bottle, Hawthorne is getting the job done, and well.”

    1. It is just information. You don’t have to buy any. I just appreciate having additional knowledge if I am looking for this type of product. I doubt that my budget could support it either but if I choose to, now I know what to get instead of buying several cheaper ones to try which adds up fast only to fail.

  1. Thanks for the informative article. I aporeciate the great advice. Knoledgeable about Paul Mitchell…hair care products…will try and look around. Need it at this time since I’m graying as well as thinning.

    Thank You

    1. For grey thinning use these products.
      – Revita
      – Revive procare kit
      – Nioxin system 2
      – Olaplex # 4,5 and (#3 one a week).
      – Oribe silverati shampoo ( use this one on special occasions)

    1. Very helpful informative information laid out to sort out which benefits come with each product. As I am seeking this product I want to do research for my own needs. Many thanks.

    2. Nioxin is a great brand however for some it may dry their hair a bit. You could use Nioxin 3 times a week and alternate with these brands.
      – Kevin Murphy stimulate me
      – Bumble and bumble thickening shampoo
      – SanchaJuan ocean mist shampoo.

    3. I had always loved the way Nioxin feels and smells… THEN I came across some information that scared me away.
It stated: what the majority of these hair restoration companies don’t tell you about their product is:
Initially, you will see an INCREASE of hair LOSS for the first 3 months. However, the product does work…as long as you use it Every Single Day. Typically, regrowth of hair will begin after 3 months.

I was concerned about losing more than what I already have…

  2. What a load of Rubbish! How much did the publishers get paid for this advertisement? The only answer to female pattern baldness is Minoxidil.

    1. I use Dr. Berg Hair Loss Formula vitamins and his shampoo and conditioner since my hair started thinning. I’ve been using this for over a month and I can tell the difference already. Even my hairstylist stated that my hears feels good and is thicker.

    1. Thinning hair, thin hair and baldness are clear sign of malnutrition. It’s an inside job you’ll never solve the problem on the outside. Eat red meat a lot of it and your hair will grow thick and natural.

    1. I was using Nioxin Shampoo, Conditioner and scalp regrowth treatment. It was working really good. I was told about Routine Shampoo and decided to try it. My hair started falling off again. I am now back to Nioxin.

    1. I was hairstylist for 40 years and have used 100’s of shampoos. But one stands out to me with my very fine hair.is Dove Intensive care it’s brilliant. And I have been using it for years since it came out.

  3. Try VO5 Volumizing shampoo. Dirt cheap, nice smell and it works! I have only been able to get it online. A long time ago, Wal-Mart sold it, then I found it in a dollar store, but no longer available at either place. I usually order it 6 bottles at a time.

  4. Ive been using the Nioxin for sensitive scalp..it is a sham, cond, and a serum. After about 5-6 wks use, my hair loss is just about back to a normal amount. I recommend it.

  5. Which shampoo is the best for thinning hair. It keeps on getting thinner. I can’t afford a expensive one thank you.

  6. Just another thing to consider: iron. My hair was shedding a good bit in the shower daily and I was getting pretty nervous about hair loss. I was in my early 40’s. I started washing my hair every 2 days because the daily shedding was just too upsetting. Turns out, my iron/ferrous sulfate stores were VERY low, which can contribute to hair loss. My doc recommended iron supplements to normalize my blood iron/stores and now my hair is back to normal with very minimal shedding. I use the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo/conditioner and have been really happy with it. Good luck!
