Consumers Report has recommended a Michilin tire and General Altimax RT43 Passenger Tire for the last 5 years. They rated it nearly as good as the Michilin tested model but it costs $50 less per tire. One year it beat the Michilin model.
Understanding that this article is a summary of other opinions, but it should also include mention that there are growing brands with excellent performance – a very small amount of research could provide examples. Kenda Tire is designed in America and produces premium performance at a Value Price rivaling Coooer. Nokian provides exceptional winter tires at least as good as Bridgestone – both are great choices which would save your readers money without sacrificing quality.
I call BS. The Michlen tires almost killed me when they flew apart on highway. Cooper last longer and get more miles. On our work trucks and they take a beating on mining roads.

I also had a Michelin explode on me on the freeway on my pickup. It was a 8 ply H.D. pickup freeway tire with about 20,000 miles on it. It was 3 years old. It ripped my gas tank neck out of the bed and through it on the pavement. Truck had a utility bed with no inner fender well. Sounded like a 12 gauge shot gun going off.
